Don't disagree and I said that it's a subjective topic in the opening post, but what I was hoping for is to try and get a clustering of ratings for the community at large. Maybe after there's a couple hundred responses someone with time on their hands or an exhaust OCD would compile the data into a handy dandy chart.

It's already a complicated enough topic when you consider performance. Couple that with the subjective issue of sound and no wonder it's always a hot topic here.

Mine is just right for me. Stock 3.0 Euro spec engine with heat exchangers into a euro premuffler ending in a 1 in 1 out FLO-PRO muffler.

The sound is deep at idle but the pitch increases as the RPMS rise.

No drone at highway speeds. In fact, with the windows up you barely hear the engine sound.

My 84 911 3.2 is much louder than my stock 996tt. The 911 has SI's and a Dansk sport muffler. It's not bad, but for me, it's too loud. I am going to experiment with Super trapps to see what I can do to tone it down a little, without robbing too much power. If anone has experience I would be interested. Otherwise, I will post m results in the next month or so.
Thanks,
Dave

Don't forget the sound ratings 1-10. 1 being a mouse pissing on cotton. 10 being a mouse pissing on a woman's bare foot and the ensuing screaming.

GT3 wasserpumper with Fabspeed center muffler bypass, otherwise stock exhaust.

Reasonable volume below 4.5K in Normal mode.

Screams like a banshee under full throttle at any RPM in Sport mode. Cop magnet.

I'd give it a 9.5

Hotrod, normally the sump plate drain plug is oriented to the drivers side to avoid pick up tube damage. Your sump plate looks thicker than most so may not be a problem, but just thought I would mention this in case you may have overlooked something.

Arrow A little loud.

Rarlyl8 headers with M&k gen V 2 in 2 out, with quiet riot auto sensing baffles matched to a 3.2ss with 46 PMO's, GT2-108 cams.

No drone at all, zero, nada.

Pleasant rumble with a deep throaty growl through 3k, up to 4.5 -5k it increases its note pitch to a symphony of flat six magic edging into a waill of a banshee at 6k plus, everything after 6k is pure harmonic bliss worthy of the mulseene straight.

A couple of rules of thumb so to speak:
More turns in the headers = lower tone.
Longer pipes = lower rpm torque.
Heavier metal in the pipes and mufflers = lower sound.
When the exhaust pulses are forced to cross each other it lowers the over-all sound out.
If you apply sound absorbing packing around perforated pipes it will diminish the sound levels...and possibly lower the tone a little too.
How's that for a few rules?
Bob

My '87 3.2 with stock exhaust was too quiet for me when I first got it.

The Dansk 1-in-2-out (84 mm) and Fabspeed euro muffler is great on back roads and medium to low speeds, but is too loud for sustained highway driving.

It does sound like an old muscle car at low & medium rpm and sounds like a race car at high rpm.

Nice Shane. What are your heater boxes attached to?
Thanks,

Nothing, I plan on removing them and plugging the inlets, I just haven't yet.

3.2 stock internals and chip, RS replica light weight carpet, much of interior is painted with a sound absorbing paint, aftermarket engine sound pad.

I have tried the following combos over the last couple of years.

- stock manifolds, straight pipe/cat delete with M&K 1 in 1 out, pretty loud, ok sound, not sure about cell phone on the freeway, pretty loud for a daily

- B&B headers 1 5/8 2 in 2 out Flow master style with Super trapps welded on both outs, loud , drone and very very heavy. no cell phone use possible on freeway, no way on a daily

- B&B with flow master 2/2 removable cap, loud and big drone, cap did not help much. No cell phone use possible on freeway. barely possible on a daily

- B&B with Magna Flow 2/2 removable cap, less loud and less drone. Still a bit much for a daily, which it is not. Hard to talk on the phone on the freeway but doable.

I wrapped the last 2 mufflers with header wrap and that helps a little.

I also tried the metal flaps trick to separate flow in the 2nd version. It did not have much effect for my set up.

I recently put a large moving blanket in the back draped over the parcel shelf and that helped a little.

I think in the end I am going to get a cheap used stock 2 in 1 out and have it modified to bollt on. I had this on SSIs on a 3.0 on an earlier car and I liked it the best. It noticeably effects power but I will switch to megaphones for the track days.

I will add rankings later, I need to re read how that is supposed to work. I am confused is 10 loud or good or both?

I believe it is...

1 = quiet

10 = My neighbors hate me

Either is good depending on personal preference.

Rather than a subjective loud, use an app to actually measure the dB.

There is a link to a great app on my post here. I am taking note of this thread and will combine 3.2 info with my thread. Lots of great info on this site, just needs to be organized.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/834369-ultimate-exhaust-resource-3-2-under-construction.html

I think the db readings are key. Otherwise it becomes very subjective. Too much work and no one contributes however...

I thought my exhaust was too loud. Now I think it is just right after a 1000+ miles. My hearing is also noticeably worse. 911 3.2 with cat bypass, and custom bursch 944 muffler. More of a straight pipe. 100db at idle outside of the car. In the car 90 db at idle, and just over 100db on fulll throttle. I have a new M&K 2:1 and SSI's that will be installed over the winter.

Mine is loud like pretty much straight pipe loud.
In the progress on making up a custom cross over system with two 350mm resonators.
Will report back early next week.
Definitely keeping the M&K's for track days.

I gutted a stock muffler and modified the piping to go up to 2.5" out. It's "throaty" without a lot of drone but my brother says the 4" tip I put on makes it look "ricey". I put the larger tip on because I thought the opening in the rear valance looked out of place so I filled it with a tip. It's got nice rumble at idle and really growls when I jump in the throttle. No pics today but I'll take one and post later.

Almost forgot! I have a cat delete pipe that helps with the growl a little too.

I have to give a big endorsement to the Bursch Quiet Street with cat bypass. It basically just liberates the motor a bit, brings it alive. Adds a bit of bass, some humm, some purring, without ever being intrusive.

It is the only non-stock exhaust setup I have ever had that:
A) my wife and all other laypersons have voluntarily commented on, in the positive
B) has never, even when really tired and in traffic, gotten on my nerves.
