A quick question on the topic, my 87 came with a Blaupunkt ARUBA, CR35, says Hi Power, even though it should have a code 158, which is what?
I really don't like this ARUBA, no knobs, all push buttons, and cassette. Thanks for any leads. G

If I'm not mistaken M490 refers actually loudspeaker set-up in doors. And there could be possibly a switch in console to adjust front/rear balance as well to go with M490, but I'm not sure about that. Do you have one?
Most likely car was delivered without radio. The head unit what you received was installed by dealer or someone after the car was delivered from factory. |

Aussie radio's
Hi, I do know that Porsche used Alpine's with a Porsche signature on them.
Here are the code numbers: 690 - CD-radio Alpine Porsche CD-10 691 - CD-radio Alpine Porsche CD-2

Here's a pic of the EUROVOX MCC2358P (PORSCHE badged) that was, developed by Eurovox Australia, in the late 80's and fitted by Porsche dealers in Australia to new cars pre-delivery .... Eurovox also supplied this radio for other marques and rebranded the cassette door accordingly ie BMW Australia used the same radio :

My 89 car M490 HiFi speaker option, M691 CD-2 option. It is an Alpine, made in Japan, not Blaupunkt. I believe it was one of the first years with CD player option. The unit on top is in car, stock unit currently on the shelf.

Well, the stock speakers are crap, so you don't actually turn the radio on. It just looks nice, compared to the ****ty look of all the modern radios.

Correct radio
Hi Diamond 911,being a fellow New Zealander living in Australia,i am really interested in what you will fit to your 911,my opinion is to fit a genuine Blaupunkt ,even a US model like Reno, Bremen, Heidelberg, or similiar that is correct year for your car.The reason is they look correct and fantastic, and although others dont agree they work wonderful,so easy to use, just a quick glance down to use , infact my Monterey in my 84 is the best radio i have owned including all my modern radios in my every day cars , but i fitted new speakers ,There is plenty for sale on ebay.I was interested to here that your car is multiple concours winner, and i think did not have the correct radio, your car would be complete and you will feel better with that correct radio, one of the first items i look at inside a 911 is for stock radio, a few photos of my also bone stock 44000 miles ex US, concours winner Queensland . Good luck.

Re 'Reno's...In North America I don't know of any year that the Reno wasn't an option except the '86-'87 that had the first Reno's, including the Monterey.

It looks to me like your car could have been delivered with one of a plethora of German tape decks available at the time. If Pelicans can't come up with a definitive answer, I doubt there's a future buyer out there who could positively deny its originality.
And with that, I'd suggest you pick the one you like best and then spend some time on ebay looking for some Bee Gees cassettes to play in it. |

They really were a poor example of a radio. Detroit actually had better radio's in the '50's. Letting the Japanese built them was a good move on the checker board for Porsche. Bee Gee's?-Ahhh no...AC-DC 'is' thee Aussies Band. Then there are the likes of The Eagles, CCR, and numerous others that I would shop on eBay for but the Gibbs Brothers?...To me they were good but not great- Right ![]() Take care

Given that this is a ROW car and the option code, I still stick with Blaupunkt Bremen or Monterrey.
Be glad you do not have to look for a Bamberg ARIMAT.

The radio that came in new Australian 1980s delivered cars was definitely a Eurovox.
The EUROVOX MCC2358P radio (PORSCHE BADGED ON TAPE DOOR), pictured above, is correct for a late 80s Porsche. Below is the Eurovox MCC-8280P that came in the very last of the G50s and the early 964 (interesting is the sticker in 2nd pic stating made in Japan) : ![]()

I have an '88 coupe, and did my best to resist trying to make her "better". Where I did allow myself to bend that rule was with electronic technology figuring that if there was one thing that advanced leaps and bounds in the past 27 years was stuff related to computers. I therefore changed out the chip with Steve Wong's, and my Toronto cassette deck with the new Porsche GPS/Blue Tooth/I-Pod or Pad/... Stereo with Focal Speakers. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! A bit pricy, but for me at least - worth every penny. I have forgotten how to use a map over the years, so I'm no longer getting lost like I did in the past. Plus, getting/making phone calls is no longer illegal. I of course kept the original Blaupunkt and speakers in a box for safe storage in the event I ever need to sell the car, but for day to day drive enjoyment - you can't beat it!

Different strokes, I know. What I don't know is for the concourse crowd, how is the original radio so critical to the car being considered original but obviously the OP's car has a very after market performance muffler. Why is one considered critical to originality while the other isn't?

Already mentioned above but I also vote for the Monterey SQR23 radio in these 84-89 cars, it just looks period correct and is a great unit.
