Dude, as a fellow cyclist and recent AC-less (84) 911 owner, this thread has me giddy with inspiration and general stoke on this car and community. I'm also fixing to take mine on an (even longer) road trip than yours after completing some 2000 incident-free miles last week (minus replacing fully-disintegrated tranny bushings in rural Colorado after Pelican overnighted me the Wevo coupler + new bushings) through the hottest states. These cars are tough as nails. I know you've been driving it in AZ.. keep on keepin' on.

Cheers!

Nice! Looking forward to seeing more from that roadtrip! No highways! It's not allowed!
Have fun!

It is nuts. So frustrating. Somewhere along the line someone with sanity owned the car because it had the turbo valve covers so at least there is a sign of someone caring. Haha. Thank goodness it's an AZ car it's entire life so there is no rust. Phew!

'Bout time for an update on this thread

I recently had Turbo tie rods put in during an alignment, the steering has never been better! I also plan on dropping my whale tail, and installing my Yakima rack, so soon I'll be copying you pretty hard

Twins! I dig the look without window tint. I might die here in AZ, but damnit it looks right to have none!

I know right?! We would have been even more twinsies if I'd ended up with an FJ, but I combined the need for a Cruiser with my M5, and went for a BMW wagon.

I also love the no-tint look, but I might feel differently without the bonkers Griffiths A/C the PO installed

It's hard to believe I've put nearly 17,000 miles on the car now. I did the valves just a few hundred miles into ownership so it was overdue!
It's amazing how much better the car idles and revs after doing the valves. I used the Kirk Engineering tool this time. Much easier!

Here is a little write up on adjusting. Nothing very technical in the post:
http://oppositelock.kinja.com/adjusting-valves-1794452269

So, with everything adjusted we did a 300 miles loop down to Tucson to ride mountain bikes. I will admit that on the way home it was 97F out so the temps increased to the point where I was a bit worried. It was running at about 240F. I know the strong winds and 2 bikes on the roof weren't helping so I decided to sit in the slow lane and take it a bit easier.
Maybe it's time for a thermostat or to install the little front oil cooler snorkel.

Thanks!
Nice car, I love it! The roof rack looks sharp with the wind deflector! I may need to rig something up on mine.

Don't want to hijack things, but I will say the deflector made A LOT of difference with noise (and using my sunroof) just FYI.

Look forward to your future posts!

Thank you! I'm going to see if I can find one that works.

A little update on old Condor. He sat in storage for a year while we drove our old Land Cruiser to South America. He fired up on the first try, puffed some smoke and then proceeded to do great for the three months we were back in the US working.

Pretty stoked on him as always, but we're realizing he may need to be sold to keep this crazy trip we're on going. Looks like the bubble is seriously popped. What do you guys think an 88 911 with about 90K miles and crappy paint worth? I fear it's so little we may just keep paying to keep him in a storage unit.

Pics of the trip home, as ya do!

For one with as much work as you've done, maybe 40's? I haven't shopped much in the past few months but your car seems in pretty good shape if this thread is any indication. Good luck! If you keep it, you probably won't regret it, though.

Great thread. I am always curious to see what sort of adventure people do with their 911 and it's cool to see pics of camping or bike racks
Which brings me to the following question: what bike rack are you using? Brand / model would be great.
Cheers, hope you get to keep the car AND continue the adventure

I started with some RockyMounts Brass Knuckles https://amzn.to/394RNmn and realized that full height bikes were taller than the entire car and moved around too much. We switched to fork mount Kuat models which hold the bikes more securely for spirited driving and less resistance at highway speeds. I like these a LOT more. https://amzn.to/39flnWk
Cheers, if money was no object I'd have a garage in the desert with the 911, the FJ40 and some old airhead bmw's.

Okay, in case I do sell it, here are some of my favorite photos. We took a trip down highway 666 (now 191) in AZ.

Well, maybe I just want one place to come and look at the best times we had with this amazing car, but I may post some more. Cheers for tonight from Argentina.

The trip to end all trips. The 3500 mile honeymoon trip. Yah, this trip has its own thread, but here are some highlights.
