I wanted to do the same, but couldnt find one either so I painted the 'ribs' on mine as a stop gap. Came out looking pretty good, but not as nice as the original 912. Looks great on the car. #770 Update - Page 10

Looks great. Do you plan on adding sound deadening to the interior? I expect Awesome Trim knows this, but I still see a lot of builds that just slap a layer of Dynamat down and call it good. It's old fashioned. For similar weight, a layered approach is superior:

Still waiting to get to my car...

I currently have two types of noise dampening: The first is this black series of pads that are reasonably thick, and on top of those and in the doors and ceiling will be Skinz pads, which are like a cheaper dynamat.

Yesterday was the first chance I had to get to Awesome trim since she arrived, and the guys were there with the fabricator that will make my rear seat delete. He is having to create a mould for the whole thing, so if it turns out right, we could make more if anyone is interested? That is still a few months away.

First thing was to offer up the rear reflector that LadyWrench designed the decal for:

Which from certain angles is just a black strip, but when facing it at 90 degrees with the headlights on looks a bit like this:

That has turned out better than I hoped - Less is more in this case.

The next part that arrived was the hood badge that I got from Jim AKA intrepidagent, which I offered up to the hood just to see I made the right choice:

Which has also turned out well, but now seeing his whole range of designs I'm wondering if I should have been more adventurous... This pic shows the paint finish quite well too, with a proud RocketWrench in the reflection....

So, pretty much on track with the build, but the only other sticking point was the audio installation guys: They turned up to do me a quote (considering that I have already bought all the hardware), and asked them if they would replace some bulbs in the dash with LEDs and tidy the wiring in the frunk....

The two guys could not have looked less interested or enthusiastic. I don't know if they were intimidated by the car, but they made no suggestions at all, and every time I asked 'could you do this?', they just shrugged and said 'guess so'.... They then sent me a quote for £989.000 to install my head unit, amp, speakers and subwoofer....

I guess I am looking for another audio installer.....

There's a good place in Bristol that did my Becker installation. If you are happy to travel let me know and I will dig out the details

Regards

Thanks Ian, but it needs to be fitted in situe around the trimmers...

I'm still struggling to find a chrome rear engine deck. Would nickel plating work?

Loads of electronics have arrived as well as some less exciting stuff such as windscreen and sunroof seals.

Firstly the iPaul 4.300 Amp by those clever German chaps at Rainbow:

This came beautifully boxed, with the amp in its own silk pouch. It was slightly heavier and bigger than I thought, but confident that it can fit under the passenger seat.

Then came another sacred unboxing of my new Morel Virtus 602 speakers, from those clever dudes in Israel.

These also were excellently packaged and oozed quality when coming out of the box:

So took them to the car to ensure that they fit correctly in the holes in the doors and not too deep. Seems they are fine:

We had various discussions about the placement of the tweeters, and eventually settled on a flush fit just above the woofer as I am deaf and need the fidelity of the higher pitches.

Other ideas were in the air vents and at the bottom of the door pockets, but on the doors themselves seemed the best option, unless anyone has a better idea?

The crossovers are also a work of art, so shame these will not be seen at all.

Finally the RECARO embossed leather for the top of the seats had arrived and the lads at Awesome will get cracking on those after Christmas....

I have Morel components in my 86, love them. Great sound, and understated appearance.

Happy New Year!!!!

Back at home following some wintersport bumps and bruises and the gentleman's sports 911project marches on.

Greg had started templating and setting out the seats to square up the edges and getting the stitching points perfect using some scrap vinyl before putting in the valuable cow hides:

As the original edges on the Recaros did not seem to be sewn very well, we are squaring them up with foam to improve the look:

Glenn is working to get the ripples out of the low part of the arms when the seatbelt will cross, so that when he cuts the hide it will be perfect.

The next challenge I pondered over the break was the headrests:

These I have decided to be lightly padded and covered in the brown leather, with chrome or black grommets in them to retain that aviation / race lightening look...

Apart from that, the build seems to be going well and now deciding on the final touches.

I am still struggling to find a chrome engine grill, LED lights front and rear and the LED headlights. The threads by Spoke and Rothaus are great, just a bit tricky to find those sorts of things this side of the pond...

I'd be wary of grommets in the headrest - if you ever actually need the headrest to save you then those will be pushed into the back of your head at great force

Thanks Sladey. The lads thought of that, but they will be recessed into the padding, and will probably be plastic, rather than actual steel/chrome.... My head has already been bashed in, so probably won't make much difference anyway....

What a fascinating build. This is going to look stunning when complete. If we lived closer I would have swapped you my Recaro's with the speakers in the headrest :-)

Great build. I love the color. It reminds me of the Land Rover "Kent" green. When I saw this FJ60 painted in that color many years ago I decided that it was my favorite vehicle color.

Looks great, keep it up!

I recently read a little of your thread and thought I'd answer a few questions...

It's been done and it saves a little weight. How much depends on which manual regulators you use and whether or not you modify them, as they are heavier than they need to be. Figure about a 7 pound loss, if you use the later, cross-arm style regulators and trim a little weight off of the metal supports on the bottom of the windows.

High frequencies are fairly directional, so you may want to angle the tweeters towards you. I once built a system in a 911 that had the left tweeter pointed roughly at the passenger's left ear and the right one pointed roughly at the driver's right ear (LHD car). This seemed to help, as the off-axis response of a tweeter is much less than a woofer, so the two sides seemed more equal to each listener. You might experiment with tweeter positioning (temporarily installing them and listening to them) a little to see what works best for you, before you mount them in the door cards.

JR
