Anyone ever make their own finned oil lines for additional cooling?
I know elephant racing makes finned oil lines...
Reviewing the internet, lots of places sell finned 3/4 inch brass and copper oil line... example: Fin Tube Manufacturers,Copper Fin Tube,Copper Alloy Fin Tube,Copper Fin Tube Manufacturers Seems it would be really easy to splice this in, and braze/solder for additional cooling... Anyone ever done that? Seems pretty easy to do... thoughts? |

yes, I bet these work well! The Elephant type have such close/shallow fins that they easily clog with road dirt, these look coarser, but maybe a bit more fragile.

Are you saying along the rocker panel?
Who is going to "ask for price"?

I worked with tubing like that in a different application. Those fins are sharp! I have the scars on my knuckles to prove it.
The issue you may run into is that the diameter of the finned tubes will be a lot bigger than the current tubes. They probably won't tuck up under the rocker well or use the existing brackets. Seems like it would be a lot easier and cheaper to just use one of the many oil coolers on the market that are proven effective, but if you do it please share the result. |

Ok, who will be the brave one...
FabTek Logic Fin Clamp Baseboard Element for 3/4 in. Copper Baseboard Piping 1 ft. Section-FCL-.75CX1FT - The Home Depot Home Depot sells a fin kit to add to 3/4 inch copper for heating... I bet you could buy this, and use each half of the clam shell on your oil line without issue. Easy to add, easy to remove... I would think it would help cooling quite a bit... |

![]() 3/4in is not enough. The factory lines are 22mm ID and the elephant lines are 7/8in ID. Len

This should definitely help...
Make sure the fins are in direct contact with the brass line along its length. I was thinking about zipties every inch or so. If its isn't touching, it can dissipate heat. Also be careful it doesn't cut into your tire... Make sure you have it on the supply line, not the return line... Might work better if you split the clam shells, and use each half separately... might also work better if applied to the line as it runs under the car -- much more airflow there... Keep us posted!!! If this works well, could start a trend .Bo |

I found a good place in the loops of the trombone cooler, well clear of the tire, both sides clamped on the pipe.
![]() For esthetics you can rotate the fin cooler to hide the bolts. I did it this way for ease of installation. If you jack the car and remove the tire I bet you could make it seem less ghetto

. . . Oh and before someone gets online and tells me to forget this route and go to the fender mounted radiator oil cooler system. . .
I've got all the parts and I'm ready to go. I was just curious to see how well this idea would work and if it would be applicable to other portions of the oil cooling system

Why four fans? Testing out the effectiveness of different sizes?

Not wanting to go OT on an oil discussion ( believe me, it has been beaten to death ) but while I am breaking in my Cams, I am using conventional DELO 400 SAE15W40 (apparently diesel engine oil ) with what I thought was a restrictive ( catches smaller microns of debris vs our beloved Mahle or even Porsche Brand ) Wix ( Napa Gold ) filter. I was expecting and prepared for higher temps but she seems to be cooler running in this summer heat and quieter as a bonus, did not expect that at all. No shavings on second oil dump cycle and still on 150 miles of my 1000 mile break in final cycle.
Just saying, I may keep Delo in for the summer to keep her cool running.

Exactly, I have two SPAL fans and two (likely cheaply made) Chinese fans. I will test out which size works the best.
This Fin Clamp idea really interested me, today should be a pretty hot one in LA, I'll take the beast out for a spirited drive, hope to see an improvement
