Now shes 30

Trend Setters,
now that my run of the mill 86 turned 30, actually last year & that I have owned her for 3 years, I wanted to give her a little freshen up. I seeked council from many of the wise ones, jedi, sensi & quite frankly nut jobs on this site.
Being how I was very new to all of this, I wanted to, for the sake of the curious, record what each "mod" did to my car. There was only four, each pretty tame. My goal is to not do anything but help her feel a little better. The goal of these posts is to let fellow first timers know what each "improvement" did to my car. I have also recorded some miles on each so I can speak to my experience....
First was the "cat pipe delete".
Now there's a horse that goes by no name in Vancouver, who parted with said pipe. A finer seller you will nay find. Then again, he is Canadian. He talked me into doing the job myself, quite easy it was, or so they would have you believe.

With the help of a good friend, well he did most of the grunt work. Through bruised bloody knuckles, the potent odor of PB blaster & a dremel tool, the old pipe succumb to our efforts.
So what did I notice?

Well, she breathed better!
Go figure, after having 30 years of carbon stuck in your throat, you would cut down on the pipe too sir. You could tell that there was a clear passage to the muffler & that the car felt just a little peppier. It wasn't that it picked up all this horse power, none that I could notice, it was more about how happier it was to use what power it had.
The sound didn't change all that much but it was an improvement. Not loud but just a little jump.
Yes, there was weight savings, the old pipe weighed a lot for the size, full of crud.
Money well spent but the damage was done, slippery slope indeed.

Have you heard of the full Monty?
Familiar with "Down Under"?

Now before we all get out of hand with the virtues of your muffler over mine, there is a reason. Ladies & Gents, this is where the nut jobs come in. Just hit "search" & type in muffler, down the rabbit hole we go, wave bye to your life, see you next Tuesday.
Opinions on this site, we all know the saying & here's mine....

Seeing how "I still call Australia home", the exchange rate meant that it was close to 35% off & most of the feedback on the Monty was positive, the decision was easy.
Like the pipe, there was much cussing, adjustments, nervous moments & altercations with the unwilling to get the old off & new on.
(Sorry for the similar shot but its just so pretty. Is it "normal "round here to crawl under your car just to look & make sure that your muffler is still there?)

So now with the pipe & new muffler..
Jeepers, we now have some improvement here. Not much horse power but the improvement over what I had was noticeable. Things seemed more direct, the car just felt like it wanted to "run" more. I should also note at this time, we are already running the 964 cam, another long story for another day but it did make it both lump & search a little more at idle. (Those in the know, know). I guess I saved some weight.
There is no "drone" that I have read so much about, there was maybe a 15% growth on the loudness factor-which for those of us that are still married is important. There's enough drone from the co pilot already.
All in all, again money well spent

Chip- I'm a fan of Steve.
Ended up taking the plunge, none of this was "off the shelf from pep boys" but thought it best to go custom. The 964 lump was noticeable & I hated the search.Off you go to Cali.
Ladies & Gents, its everything-its cracked up to be. What we must remember here is that you are not going to take a 200 HP car & turn it to 300HP tire burning monster, not with the mods I am doing, that's not the goal. There were more horses there & when I say there, they are now "there". Has anyone seen the CIC where our friend Jerry has his own 72 rs, I think he takes out Seth Myers? Well, he has a "S eating grin" on his face in a shot or two. I know that grin, thanks to Steve. The throttle response is not snap neck but Its alive. You feel the car & the car feels you. We are not a 30 year old engine any more.
The first time I drove it my though was " now we have a race car!"

though about lowering but why? I like it the way it is, the way nature intended.
The steering in more responsive, the tires grip (RE11), oh & while I was at it a "turbo steering wheel". The car now handles so much better, no play in the wheels & I don't know if this is going to make sense, sits in corners more, there's a lot less drift.

For anyone that's thinking of doing any of these mods I would suggest using every piece of advice here on this site. I now have the car that I love driving more & more each time, thanks to everyone here & a little disposable income.
That's my tale, I really didn't do too much given all the other changes to cars on this site but again I wanted the car to not change, just get back to feel young again.

Happy 30! Mine just hit 35 and here in NC I now have no more inspections and can run a 1982 vintage tag on mine!
Cheers...
