Tom you rock! This bar goes in this week. :)
Got my oil cooler hoses but am beat from riding bike park all day.. Ill slap up some pics tomorrow. |
Oil cooler hoses installed, filled Bugbug back up with oil. No leaks! Not that Id thought there would be, but nice nonetheless.
So! Temps are wayyy down obviously. Mission accomplished. ;) One more little thing done. Other small stuff done not mentioned in the "build thread" -All fuel hoses replaced -New fuel accumulator -Valve adjustment -Turbo covers -Plugs -Replaced broken fuse block(Yay! Lights!!) -New internal Tstat and oil pressure sender(Wrong sender was giving some nutty pressure readings, thanks pelican with the gauge part # the proper sender was provided) -New temp sender too! Also the wrong sender for the gauge..( The motor is not the original, nor are the gauges. Some fun there, but sorted now.) -Ripped out all the rear carpet and front mats/bottom carpet. Just old and crappy. -Replaced a bunch of vacuum lines including brake booster stuff -New H4 bulbs and a few tail light/marker bulbs -Tore out cd player and speakers -Removed the giant tits off the back bumper(Made of lead! haha!) -Changed out the steering wheel for an older momo I had (The wheel I removed was ricediculous) -Got the horn working(10 lbs of gravel in the existing horn, swapped out -Track mats(love dem) -Removed FG wing that was tired, ugly and probably never fit right -A ton of cleaning! This car was grubby beyond grubby.. Still not done with cleaning.. But!! The targa bar is getting welded back where it once belonged on Monday. Paint, Glass etc to follow.I received my trim / seals/ etc for the rear of the car yesterday so no excuses! |
I'm lucky enough to have a friend who is a bodyman/metal fab guy. Adam at Metalcraft helped build my flared 914 years ago and has turned out a ton of awesome builds since we became neighbors 10 years ago..
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507608826.jpg We were going to do this at my house, but decided to just do it at my shop.(2 doors down from his shop), then (thankfully) we ended up doing this at his shop this holiday Monday. I was almost worthless, but did buy pizza and took some measurements. ;) This is how it went. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507606375.jpg Yuck! The removal of the cab mounts was ugly. More like the fab was ugly. So it was decided to cut away the inner tub to reveal the bottom of the original Targa bar. Ever wonder how far that bar is welded into the tub? There you have it! No rust! That's always good.;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507606375.jpg Boxing in the inner support. A ton of cleanup, and welding was done in the adjacent areas to fix up the cab conversion. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507606375.jpg This is the "new" bar welded to the old mount. Using Tom's measurements and the top I borrowed, we located/positioned/mounted the bar. This picture the welds have been sanded a bit and primered. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507606375.jpg Bad picture! This is the other side, sorry for the quality, but not that exciting anyways. Looks like it should before finishing. What I still have to snap pics of are the window channel bits, and the final inner skinning of the tub. It looks good! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507606375.jpg Is it a Targa yet?? Damn close.. But I don't think so.. The glass is next. Is it possible to install the glass and pull it right out without damaging the seal? I would like to do this if I can, just for fitment of the glass. I'm going to tackle the glass seal next. I tried half assedly but need to give it a real go. Its gonna be a real pain if my preliminary attempts are any indication!Haha! Progress!!! I almost have myself a Targa.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...sun_smiley.gif |
There is on this forum a very good post of targa window fitting by using ground anchors and a strap to put forward pressure on the glass, that makes pulling the seal in much easier (don't have to press on the glass at the same time).
|
Good luck with the glass, it's something you only want to do once.
|
Maybe turn it into a soft window Targa?
Looks good so far! |
Glad the measurements were helpful; Looks good!

Paint! Getting prepped now. H4s and a duck enroute from my man Strudelwagen , Signal Orange is the color.👍😎😎 pics of prep later.. |
Last Sunday I dropped the Bug off at Metalcraft.(Look at those hotrod oil lines :P) It was the nicest day in a couple weeks, so the cool temps coupled with no top or rear glass didn't matter. I was too busy having fun:cool: New oil cooler doing its job perfectly.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508386894.jpg On the weekend my buddy Strudelwagen said he would send me a ducktail with some H4s. He obviously rules! The duck fits nice, and the headlights beat the crap out of the old sugar scoops. Thanks SF!!!!! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508386894.jpg Disassembly, and some body work. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508386894.jpg The bug bug was pretty smooth, just lots of clear and paint. Too much clear and paint! at least its not crusty underneath. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508386894.jpg Some more sanding and some cookie cutters taking the stage! The speed metal Porsche paint/bodywork wheels in full effect :P http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508386894.jpg Also, glass out.(windshield! obviously the rear glas was out! haha!, window glass not out) Forgot to mention that. Also the antenna is history. Welded up and gone. New glass on the way and seals, trim from our host. Bug bug is coming along! Check out that hotrod oil cooler:cool: Orange tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508386894.jpg |
Nice! 😎

This is way too much fun! Reassembly is going nicely. Glass on Tuesday. All the new trim and seals are going to make everything extra cool. My beater hotrod almost looks good enough to go to the ball! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508561668.jpg I have a cool old grill for the duck somewhere, looking forward to all the trim around the rear window to go on.:) Almost a Targa again:) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508561668.jpg Swiss cheesed rear bumper coming soon!:D This color rules!!!!!! |
Do you have the rear window seal? I thought they were NLA?

The Bugbug is coming along... That bumper is swiss cheese ! ;) Glass was postponed until tomorrow. Looking forward to the final re Targafying of this car. Wish me luck!:D I'm close.... |
Very nice! B)

great job and nice color!
but, I never understand why body shops never mask off the engine and interior when prepping the body. it gets all dusty!! I'd hate that cleaning afterwards if it was my car :fail: Quote:

Ha! Its insult to injury Flo.. Its ok, Bug bug was born to be dirty!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508905793.jpg Crap! Upside-down pic.. The bug is assembled! Glass guy had a hiccup or 4 trying to install the windshield.. So he's bringing in an extra one, presumably in case he breaks the first. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508905793.jpg Bugbug has a buddy! A 74 coupe, its no Targa, but its pretty clean. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508906092.jpg The good part of the glass guys visit is that he got the rear seal on, (correctly too!) and it all looks good. This pic has the glass sitting on the tub.. I almost have a Targa! To be continued.... Tomorrow.... I think.....:D |
|
wow, good progress!
|
'Sup?
Looks awesome, but you know it's not "officially" a Targa until that rear glass is firmly affixed! :) |

Pics to followSmileWavy |
Impressive!
Were you able to source a new rear glass seal or did you go with used? |
Lookin' good!
|
After the original glass guys couldn't even begin to get the trim in the car.. I gave them the option to bail. You have never seen 3 guys faces light up with relief and run for their van as fast. Hilarious but obviously irritating as this cost me a week and a half.
Anyway... Today the guys that the local Porsche dealers use exclusively came out. After much pushing, slapping and shoving.... I have a Targa!!!!!!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...sun_smiley.gifhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...sun_smiley.gif http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...sun_smiley.gifBack glass is sealed up, trim is sweet. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509428038.jpg Tickled to say the least! It can be done! I cant say I wasn't sweating it a bit, but all the measurements were good within 1mm and the top fit nice, but hey, until that back glass is in....Its no Targa! Really happy;) Here it is cleaned up.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509428038.jpg BugBug is officially back to where he once belonged! The Rag That Should Not Be has been banished! Next is the windshield.. We had some trouble with it, and ran out of time. It almost seems like the seal (OEM) sucks... looking for a Porsche one tomorrow. But! Targa bar trim and seals can go on in the morning. ;););) |
Excellent! I'm sure I wasn't the only one with fingers crossed you would get it all set right.
|
congrats!!
|
Very nice!
Good work.... |
Congratulations! I’m very happy that it all came together as that rear window install seemed very difficult.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509597950.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509595811.jpg Fully assembled! Top is tight, and snaps into place nice. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509595811.jpg Home! A bit of rain but that's no surprise.;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509595811.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509595811.jpg Snug like a bug in a rug.:D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509596355.jpg Those euro h4s look a ton nicer than the scoops. Now.... Interior and some other snacky treats over the coming rainy season. SmileWavy |
Wow! I think I'm in Love :p
Well done! |
nice work!!!!!!
|
Bravo!
My current Carrera is a low mileage, original paint, bone stock, mint example (like almost every 911 I've had). But it will be my last one like that. I'd much rather have something like yours, way more fun! |

My first try at installing carpet. A little wavy here and there but a massive improvement over what was there previously. My inner Targa trim was hashed.. But the aluminum frame and padding was good! I wrapped it up in perlon for the time being. I like it actually. All the trim pieces and rear inner quarters sourced from the classifieds:cool: ( As well as some nice visors ) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1511156828.jpg Still looking for a drivers side pedal board so I can finish it up. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1511157565.jpg And the crummy old cards had to go.. These were breezy to install. Appbiz on all accounts. Good stuffSmileWavy |
Nice job! :)
