Cab back to Targa! Project "BugBug" goes back to where he once belonged
So, I did start another thread previously, looking to see what cab parts could be reused on this project, but I figured an actual build thread is in order.. I'm taking a Cab'd Targa and turning it back into a targa.

Ive always wanted a Targa! This is just the most difficult way I could do it!:P Story of my life! :) |
well, we whish you a good build!
|
So, I was able to borrow a nice top to align some stuff!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506661843.jpg I don't have any of my seals yet, so I don't know if the rear window interface is good or not. It is just sitting on the body right now. How much wiggle room will I have? Any? Also this isn't even tacked up, just sitting loose. looks square to the bar though! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506661843.jpg In the last pic you can see the door window glass against the bar. Also pretty square, but again no seals or trim. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506661843.jpg Question: As mentioned I have no seals installed (Not entirely true, I have my windshield to top seal), how critical is the bar to top seal for alignment? I have the top fully clicked in to the windshield, and the body/bar footprint matches. seems to be nice and tight on the windshield and square to the bar.. Man! I wish I had a stripped Targa to take some shots off of! Ah well, onward through the fog!:D |
Wow...this is some project! Not sure I can help you but I own a targa and if I can provide any photos or measurements that would be helpful, I'm happy to oblige.
Good luck, brother. |
Props to you for doing this. You're only adding value to that car!
|
A good decision on your part. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
|
I just happen to have two stripped targas sitting in my garage, if you need any photos measurements let me know.
|
Dpmulvan! I would love a few pics!
Top of tub to leading top edge of bar for starters.. And if the glass is out then back of center of bar to back center of tub.. That would be really cool. I wish I had a local tub to eyeball, would make this easier for sure :P Anyone see anything out of whack so far? Top to door glass is good, door glass seems square with the bar.. Anything I dont see? Thanks guys! |
I also have a completely bare '74 Targa shell & would be happy to help with pics & dimensions. If you are specific with your request, I'll take pics & measurements for you of where the Targa bar is located on the tub I have...
Just let me know. Tom |
Tom, that would be great! Again,
Top of tub to leading top edge of bar for starters.. And if the glass is out then back of center of bar to back center of tub. Also center of winshield targa top locating pin to front edge of bar. |
I kinda like your front valence, do you know what brand/model/manufacturer that is?
Cheers. |
Also... this may help... but beware, it might be SWB dimensions & I'm not sure if they are the same forward of the torsion tube as LWB tubs...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506720486.jpg |
Tom, where did you find that? I want to print it out.. That is the key!
|
I'm pretty sure I got it from the Restoration Designs site - they have a few of the factory workshop manual dimensioned drawings available for download.
Restoration Design Inc. | Videos & Media I've got a bunch of them printed out on 24"x36" paper on my shop wall for reference... super handy! Again, it may be for a SWB tub, which may or may not be the same as a LWB tub! I can verify a few dimensions on the '74 I have over the weekend... Tom |
|
So, another measurement if possible that I thought of.. The bar has that little lip that sticks out 90 degrees near the tub,... Measurement from tub to lip. Itll be small, but handy:) Thanks in advance!
This pic is the cab crap apologizing to the Targa bar. Cut it all out this evening. At least its gone.;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506745938.jpg The before ..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506745938.jpg The after! Shes a hottub now!!! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506745938.jpg Next step involves repairing the damage done by the cab mounts, and welding the bar back in. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...sun_smiley.gif I almost have a Targa! Yes!!!! |
I'll get you some pics today, this afternoon and post them here.

Here's some random pics if you need more let me knowhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506783676.jpg

Having troubles with uploads pm your email and I'll send you more
|
Seems like what you'd want to do is very lightly tack it in place, install everything (rear glass, top, seals etc.) then untack it so that the bar self adjusts to its natural position. Then weld it up.
|
Great project, btw! Can't wait to see it finished. A turbolook targa, with no tail, is one of the best configurations and rarely seen.

I looked for a long time for a build thread like this when I was considering converting a 964 Cab to a Targa. Glad to see someone finally tackling it. |
Those are helpful pics! Now break out that tape measure for me :)
Mc lovin, that's kinda the plan. Right now I have all of the seals etc on a truck somewhere. Should see them this week. So far, with what I have to mock up it looks close to me.. The glass seal will be the final part of the mock up I need. BUT! those pics with measurements are going to be really helpful;) Hint Hint |
awesome work! keep it up!
|
Took some pics to compliment/compare with Dpmulvan's. Measurements to follow...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801296.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801296.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801296.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801296.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801296.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801296.jpg |
First measurement is down the centerline of the rear window opening: 700mm
From here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801667.jpg To here (looks like 701, but is really 700): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801667.jpg |
Next measurement is the same place, but from the top: 705mm
From here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801855.jpg To here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801855.jpg |
Next measurement is from the center of the targa bar flange to the top of the windshield: 760mm
From here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801972.jpg To here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506801972.jpg |
Last is from the right-side latch point on the targa bar to the rear edge of the corresponding hold in the windshield frame: 664mm from the front of the flange & 686mm from the targa bar.
From here (664mm): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506802155.jpg To here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506802155.jpg And here (686mm): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506802155.jpg To the same rear hole edge... Hope that's all helpful. |
Tom,
How about measurements from right side latch point to left side hold point and from left side latch point to right side hold? Thanks, Mike |
Tom thanks for the measurements, Im finishing up my EDM build and sort of forgot.

Not sure how reliable these are as the rear hold points are not 100% fixed (the tube ends are a little bendable)... Anyway, the 2 cross measurements (right rear to left front & left rear to right front) on my tub are: 1143mm & 1148mm As measured from here at the front: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506822365.jpg To the top/center of the rear tube: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506822365.jpg |
Thanks. I will check mine to see what they are. I was hit years ago on the front right side and I suspect my chassis to be a little off side to side. I had my targa top restored and to remove one front down pin to be able to lock it down.
|
You guys are awesome! Great pics! Now.. What can we measure as a height off the tub to top of bar? That's the only missing shot:D Thanks again!!!
Bugbug needs an oil cooler, so I bought a nice unit from Jegs with the plan to plumb it all in 3/4" SS and some hoses ant each end ala the factory setup, only my cooler was going to mount in the dam.. I spent the day mounting the cooler and bending up some lines. My arms are shot! Cooler is the right size, just had to cut off one mount and reweld it. Its a nice piece, has a separate drain and 1/2" npt port. In/out is 12 AN http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506832055.jpg Mounted up! This dam is going to change , but this is good enough for now. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506832055.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506832055.jpg Bend and bend some more.. 0.49 SS is a PITA to bend by hand but doable. The trick is to have a beer every now and then.;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506832055.jpg The little notch for the jack post was particularly annoying haha! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506832055.jpg Before fittings were welded(actually not fully formed up here) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506832055.jpg Kinda out of order, but I took this while installing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1506832055.jpg That's it for today! Hoses monday;) Thanks again for all the pics. Cant wait to weld that bar on.. Its comin! |

First measurement is: 835mm From the front outside corner of the rear seat: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507081365.jpg To the centerline of the latch-point on the Targa bar: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507081365.jpg |
Second measurement is in the center and is: 955mm
From the flange at the top of the tunnel: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507081580.jpg To the top of the rain gutter lip: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507081580.jpg |
