Awesome! I love getting new tools and parts. That P201 is nice. Nicer than the one I picked up. Good call on the Stomski dial indicator. That's in my future too.

The OE cylinder base gaskets are superior to the VR ones in my opinion. Your squished package is a blessing in disguise.

i may or may not be planning to sell the whole kit when i'm done. no sense holding on to tools just in case i may need them again in 10-20 years. part of why i bought the good/right stuff instead of cheaping out.

so my birthday is this thursday and i've been bumming pretty hard about it.
my wife told me that she had a little road trip cooked up for Sat/Sun and i was advised to make no plans that would interfere. so i did as i was told and tried not to guess where the surprise road trip was headed.
turns out, my wife had organized a bit of a surprise party for me and most of my very closest friends. #deceived #collusion
my friends Joe and Mack arrived late friday night and saturday morning, Joe and i got stuck right into the 911. (Joe owns a small performance shop in Stroudsburg, PA and has worked for a few well-known race shop in addition to several race teams...all BMW or Porsche)
what follows is a rundown of my weekend by day.

Saturday 9/22
Joe and i are pulling the engine out of the car and the dog loses her composure upstairs. turns out Ted showed up to help supervise.

we get the engine on the stand and wouldn't you know it, Pawel showed up. #dontlook

and he brought goodies from my favorite pizza place and Rennline!!

filthy tin removed and engine cleaned a trifle more.

this picture is legit only so i know where the starter wires go.

Joe and Pawel admire the incredible amount of oil on the outside of the engine. #harleydavidson

and /Saturday

Sunday 9/23

it was beautiful on Saturday and scheduled to pour rain all day today, so we went to the Indianapolis Zoo and then to see Hank.

bought a book. #justoldpeoplethings

i think it's a bit unprofessional to not type the author's name, don't you?

my smile is really coming along.

i realize there is no car content in this post. but i can assure you we used a lot of words all day Sunday talking about cars.

Monday 9/24

alarm at 07:00 and work clothes on. break out the big guns, and we're making a mess.

#moist

Joe: Hey Chris, did you buy the Stomski slid-hammer cam pin remover?
Chris: Nope. That $40 seemed better spent elsewhere.
Joe: Word. Wait til you see this.

4 broken exhaust studs when the VCs were pulled off. once i started removing the barrel nuts, the end result was 6 broken exhaust studs. the last two were hanging on by a thread and took no force to snap. washers and nuts layed out to verify the count. #art

pulled the heads, cam, and tower as an assembly.

more Monday 9/24

Literally all of bank 2

Bank 1

clean bores with no scratches or scoring

seems like a lot of carbon (oil presumably) on the piston crowns. but for 145k miles and the condition of the bores, i think it'll do. any input here from the pros?

"tidied" up the garage a trifle and then took Joe and Mack to the airport. this is where it is right now.

next step is to pull these wretched head studs, set the new ones, and then slide the jugs/slugs back home. i'll start on the heads after that is sorted.

/update

I know you have been pushed into it, but man, do you ever have guts!
I guess no guts, no glory. Good on you.

Great to have friends like that and an ace way to spend your Birthday.

Keep it up, you’re an inspiration! (To me anyway!)

If you try and clean the carbon on the pistons do not waste your time with chemicals.
5Gal bucket with just enough Diesel Fuel to soak the whole thing. It will wipe off with a paper towel. Cleans and lubricates.

Thanks! I’m doing my best to make our people (not rich) proud.

Hell yeah! Great pro-tip. I’ll definitely give that a shot. Thank you.

Kelly is really the very best.

I spent all day yesterday working on my ‘new’ mountain bike. So now I need to get out to the garage to start pulling head studs.

Bank 2 studs. Uppers are on top.

studs out and headstud removal "kit"

complete kit with all 24 studs (30 pieces)

and one engine that looked way dirtier until i knocked over a drip pan full of oil onto the floor. now the engine looks a lot cleaner...by comparison.

all in, a little over 2 hours to pull all 24 studs. had a few really fight me, but nothing a bit more heat, some leverage, and some choice expletives couldn't overcome.

need to buy more cat litter and some stuff to clean the case before i go much further.

**FRIENDLY REMINDER**
tomorrow is my actual birthday. if you find you have a set of 98mm P/Cs laying around that you just don't love, they'd make a great gift for someone i know. lololololol.

Love the thread! Thanks for posting. I'm at the beginning of this road myself, and seeing someone else doing it definitely helps!

Man I hope this is true! I'm going to try it for sure. I have some DISGUSTING pistons from some BMW M6x engines sitting around that would be really nice to rehab a bit.

So did your case have case savers in it? Or were some of the studs pulled out?

Aluminum cases don't use case savers.

BTW, What studs are you using? Since you pulled all the studs, I guess they won't be stock steel.
