Chin Spoiler Without a Tail
Hell all,
I’m sure there have been threads on this subject but I haven’t seen them. I have an 84 911 cab. It’s a standard narrow body without a tail. I put 9 inch Fuchs in the rear and 7’s on the front and I like the “heavier” look that this affords the car. I have been contemplating putting a chin spoiler on the car but am unsure how this will effect things. I know with a chin spoiler that you are really supposed to have a tail but for for a narrow body car I don’t prefer a tail. Anyway, has anyone done this? Ie chin spoiler and no tail. Could you post a pic? Did you like it? Any adverse effects?? Positive effects. |

I think the problem is when people put a whale tail on the car without a front spoiler..

It will definitely change the aero balance of the car by effectively adding downforce to the front and reducing air pressure under the car. Whether your car will become "unbalanced" can only be determined in a wind tunnel or on a race track at high speed. If you never go above 80mph you will never notice a difference. At 140 it may be a different story.

Still here

Bear in mind all these are coupe numbers.
I have never found any for the open tops. And yes, prefer the clean tailless look as well. |

I liked the look of a chin spoiler without a tail too... Car looks less "delicate" or something with it on. I think longhoods look better with the delicate look to me, while impact-bumpered cars look better suited to the "heavier" look you mentioned. Car was noticeably more stable at highway speeds- haven't been beyond that, so can't comment on stability at track speeds. More food for thought...

Actually, when I get over like 90, I can feel the front lift abs get lighter. I’ll bet the chin spoiler will at the very least reduce this. Ok. Thanks guys. I’ve made up my mind, I’m doing it!!!!! I have the engine out and doing a bunch of work right now. I’ll post pictures once it’s all done!!!

Does it disturb air mid car to reduce lift on the rear?

I as a Targa owner haven’t noticed a significant handling difference on the road without the top on. However I’m turbocharged and have noticed my intake air temperatures are roughly 3-5 degrees Celsius hotter with the roof off.

case 1: roof off and windows down, the spoilers still work pretty much as usual but total drag goes way up, this is the worst case scenario
case 2: roof off w/ windows up drag goes way down, not as low as all closed up but not too bad either, spoilers function as usual case3: roof on w/ windows down drag is higher than all closed up, somewhere in between case 1 & 2. A similar thing happens w/ coupes w/ windows down, drag goes up and spoilers work as usual

You wouldn't notice it as a driver, the drag goes up, much more so w/ windows down and roof off, but some w/ roof off and windows up(the low pressure area where the roof was mostly pulls air from the cockpit w/ the streamline flow pretty much undisturbed). The motor just has to work a bit harder for the same speed.

I ran at Sebring for a number of years - chin spoiler - no tail -
No adverse effects - car was more planted on the high speed sweepers (BTW - Sebring is a fast track - if there were handling issues, they would have been uncovered)

It looks great with just a chin spoiler. Debating on doing this look as well!

I added a factory front chin spoiler because I just don't like the look without one. I'm not a fan of whaile-tales. So this is how I run. I've done quite a few runs of +120 mph runs on the autobahn and it feels planted. Doing these speeds in my '72 911T is scary, not so in the carrera.

As per pic, chin spoiler and no tail. I've had my car up to 135mph and it felt rock solid. and around fast sweepers at 100mph.
