Randy, you are not imagining things. Sadly, PP is infested with scammers, and not very sophisticated ones. I once was looking for a Klein screwdriver andd pisted a WTB ad on PP. I was immediately contacted by a person who was a pretty obvious scammer. I asked him for a photo of the screwdriver and he sent me a photo of some pliers.

I put up a post looking for an early lighted Porsche key.
Five out of the six people, who contacted me, have tried to scam me. Just for a key. |

Especially on the WTB or if you reply to a seller to say you will purchase. Better to PM the seller directly and not alert the scammers.

Also, whatever you do, when using PayPal, don't ever send money, by using the "family and friends" option or you will be out of luck, trying to get your money back!

Someone tried to scam me last week.
I posted a WTB. See if they have an active account and then make them private message you. ![]() Sadly, our country is FULL of scammers now. Matt |

There are plenty of legitimate sellers here.
Start by checking seller’s post count. More is better. Check to see if the seller has posted useful advice in the technical forums. This is pretty easy to do. Only use the PP infrastructure to send seller a PM if you want to buy something. (Per mepstein’s advice) Do not post WTB ads, or if you do, expect to sift through countless scammer responses. Use normal internet common sense when making a purchase. I have had no issues buying from the classified section here. I dunno, maybe I’m just lucky?

Honestly, scammers are everywhere.
What bothers me more is the Pelicanheads racing to claim "scammer" every time a legitimate seller here offers a low price or makes a slightly inaccurate offering.

I too have been approached by scammers a bunch it seems to me they troll the Wanted ads mostly and so we need to be careful when posting those types of ads. Sad as a Wanted ad is sometimes the only way to find a seller that has what I want or need

I think the scammers target the demographic -well off older guy who wants parts for his toy/Porsche. We are pretty free with our money and quick to jump when there’s something we want. Don’t be afraid to do your due diligence. FaceTime with a seller to review a part. That will help weed out the guys who are ripping off pics and pretending they have the part. Make sure you are sending money to the actual seller. Scammers are quickly making up names that are one letter or number off the real seller name to fool the buyer into sending money to the wrong person.

Yes. But easy to navigate. They are pretty obvious. For one. Just look at the amount of posts they have. Then ignore.

Do a Google picture search on all provided pictures, and ask for additional pictures with a scale or something similar for verification that they had the item.
The worst is Facebook. Scammers are setting of new Groups titled like "993 Cars and Parts and things". The admin and moderators will be scammers with bogus reviews and the power to delete your feedback or comments. All the pictures and posts are taken from other sites. If the Group was just started a few weeks ago and they have many positive reviews, all posted within a few days, and they are selling many rare and expensive items for cheap, they are a scam. You can open the individual's profiles and check a couple levels to find out everything is bogus. It's actually quite funny to look at the profiles of those giving high praise recommendations and stating "this is legit", "best seller ever", and "received in 3 days". They are buying very expensive rare Porsche parts but they are a 20 something living in Pakistan or Vietnam, with a profile created 2 days ago. |

You just need to trust your gut. Talk to people. Offering to have a phone call gets rid of 99% of scammers. I once was selling a 2009 BMW wagon on auto trader. Got a message: how long have you owned it and why are you selling? My response. I’ve owned it 49 years and selling to buy an onion farm. He told me he would send a cashiers check the next day. Game over.
