Stiffening kit
What must be done or removed to install the chassis stiffening kit? I am considering, well decided to drive out to California from Michigan in August and the stiffening kit sounds like it might be a good idea. I was just wondering where it welds on to and what must be removed to put it on. Thanks for any help guys.

As I recall, the rear suspension and trailing arms are removed. The inner fenders wells are cleaned and preped for welding. The Kit gets welded on to that. I dont think you need to remove the axles. But you might consider doing it anyway and have them checked for straightness and replace the gaskets. The boxed arm kit is also pretty cool for your rear trailing arms. Which you could do when you take off the trailing arms.

That shows the kit going into Don Haney's Six conversion. --DD |

I'll be leaving sometime in August. I want to be there for the races at Monterey, and driving down the coast sounds nice. I am starting in East Lansing at MSU, hopefully I'll make it back for fall classes. When are you going? We should meet up.

isn't there a tour *UP* the coast consisting of teeners going to parade2000 right around that time?.. i used to have the link, but my computer crashed last week.. so don't know the info anymore.. someone else can fill in.. as the time gets closer.. maybe you can check on www.fairplex.com for upcoming events (i think they only list 3 months ahead of time) and maybe hit one of our (i live in pomona) infamous pomona swap meets. i'd even be up to housing a few teeners at my house, considering i live about 0.8 miles from the swap meet..
just thinking out loud.. Jeff |

Unless you race and have had problems with tweaking, I'd think the Brad Meyer(sp?) kit would be more of the safeguard you're looking for. Brad's kit reinforces the longitudinals which tend to rot out WAY before the rear section.
If the car doesn't have an absolutly clean past they look close for any rust in the suspension console. Then look again to see if a "creative" PO used fiberglass or Bondo to repair the structural rust. |

Look around at the various 914 buyers guides (this site and the 914 fans page) there is the "Dave's big butt test" where in a portly friend site in the passenger seat and takes the top off, rolls down the window and tries to open the door.If either the door sticks or a noticable change in the door to body panel gap occurs, you have longitudinal rust causing frame sag. The Brad Meyer kit is made specifically for this problem. Also take off the outer rocker panel, it may just be rust from debris caught in there, but it can also be from the battery acid flowing down the engine shelf and into the longitudinal. If the long is O.K. replacement jack post re-inforcments can be bought for $10-$15 and welded on.
