Synchro circlip

I need some help. I'm starting my first transmission rebuild and am already stuck. I'm trying to take the circlip off of the synchro assembly. I modified/filed my expanding pliers some to help them expand more, but I still can't figure out how to get the circlip off. I think I need a third hand to pry off the circlip while I'm holding on to the pliers. Any suggestions? Thanks
Kent

Nevermind. I became desperate and tried one last attempt and had my wife be the third hand! It actually worked.

I usually get one edge off and then pry with a screwdriver.

Them things are a mouse trap. I bent the largest spring clip pliers I had before resorting to screwdrivers. It worked but I had to keep track of my fingers real close.

While I held the pliers my wife got one end free and then used the screwdriver to pry the rest off like James mentioned. I couldn't do it by myself. Thanks for the suggestions.

It is not easy. I Filed the inside of a pair of snap ring pliers so they would expand more and help. You also have to position the circlip in just the right place to help get it out. When I'm in a "groove", I can do them quickly. But I still have problems too.

One thing that helps is not to expand both side of the circlip. You want to hold one side of the circlip in place and expand only one side (Usually the left side), and kinda pop it out of the groove. Then put a screwdriver under it and work it around.

Yeah, these days, 20 seconds or so...But I've done a couple...

Where is Ridgecrest?

Let me know when you're coming through. My job keeps me traveling a lot but hopefully I'll be there. Your article has been a big help. Thanks
