Be sure to check under where the battery tray was to see if there is extensive rust on the suspension console, very critical point. Also check behind the rocker panels and jack points. There is some good info on this website about what to check when buying a 914. Personally I would try to look for something with a very solid body and no rust, and go from there. Body work can get real expensive and time consuming.

If there is rust through on the right-side "sail panel", there is probably MASSIVE rust on the whole right side of the engine bay. And that includes the support for the right-rear suspension. And I wouldn't be surprised if the longitudinals were rotten, too.

Unless you're in the Rust Belt, where low-rust 914s are VERY hard to find, I'd suggest passing on this one. Unless you have room to store a parts car, in which case it may be worth a few hundred.

If you're in the Rust Belt, this *might* be saveable. I'm not sure how much it would be "worth" in that case--it depends on how rare 914s are, how much it will *really* cost to fix it all up, etc.

I got a 73 2.0, and upon inspection fund the battery tray rusted, both driver and passanger longs rusted. I found I can repair all the damage from about $350 + a paint job + the flares + suspension + um, well I think you get the idea. I live in the rust belt as so many of you call it, and if you havn't done rust repair here its time to learn. Go buy a $200 welder from some local store and practice.

One thing before you buy and car with rust, grab a hammer and pound on the rusty spots. If it holds up, the rust may just be surface, I was suprised to see how much rust I could just knock off with a wire wheel and have lots of solid metal left.

I'd guess anywhere from 1-2.5k depending on the rest of the car. What kind of shape the interior is in, tires and what not. Mines in pretty good shape and I got it for 3k in Michigan. It didn't have a functioning tranny at the time of purchase.

The answer to your original question is really a matter of simple supply and demand economics. If you live where there are just a few 914's around, you might expect to pay more than we might here in California. Your profile indicates that you live in AZ which should also be a fairly target-rich environment for well preserved 914's. I personally would pass on this car and find one in better shape. From your description I can't imagine paying more than $1K for this turkey. Lastly, in my opinion any reported "rebuild" that does not have documentation of the work performed should be considered suspect.
