Otto's - Venice
Can't say enough. Otto and Jason fixed up my Type IV motor like no one else could. I had a nagging problem with a miss and it took real genius to figure it out. I put this engine together myself and couldn't figure out the miss. I took it to two other shops with no success. Finally, I went to Otto, and SHAZAM, the car runs well again.
For those of you who know Otto's, this is nothing new. For those of you who don't, I heartily endorse this shop.

Ultimately, it came down to the accelerator pumps being out of whack. In reality, it's hard to say what initially caused the problem because so many little things were fiddled with by the other mechanics before it got to that point that it's hard to say. I think along the way the accel pumps were adjusted in attempt to fix the problem, but, basically were not the problem.
So, whenever the main issue (which was most likely a dead float-which doesn't work no matter how well you set the "levels"!) was finally worked out, the accel pumps were still off-kilter. Now it rips.

Otto did alot of work on my home made 1975 914-6.
He knows Porsche's especially 914-6's He rebuilt the Webers on my 2.7 motor and did a ton of other work on the car. I could not believe how smooth that motor ran after he rebuilt the carbs and tuned the motor up. |

What kind of 2.7 is in your conversion? I'd like to compare it to the seat of the pants feel of my 2.4. I've been thinking of selling the 2.4S engine and putting in a 2.7RS spec engine for more grunt.

It was a stock 2.7 with Webers, headers and a bursch muffler.
I have never been in a 914 with a 2.4 so I can't compare it. With the 2.7 I could barely beat a stock 911SC 0-? on the street. Otto only tuned the motor up and rebuilt the carbs. Two years later the 2.7 started pulling head studs like most stock 2.7's do. I chose to dump the motor and put in a Euro 3.2 motor with DME. The 3.2 has allot more torque and power but does not rev as free as the 2.7. That being said the 3.2 is a much better daily driver street engine. The fuel injection and the extra torque and power is priceless. Its now faster than most stock normally aspirated 911's including the 996. Its hilarious to see the look on there face when they get beat by a 914. I especially love the look on there girl friends face. Steve

Flywheel lightening?

What about lightening the flywheel. That should help a lot with throttle response. |

Well, my 2.4 revs like mad and should make around 200-210 hp, which is right there in early 3.2 territory. But, it doesn't have the grunt of a 3.2. I used to have an 84 3.2 coupe and it was a totally different kind of fast.

How are you getting 200 - 210 hp out of a 2.4 when the 2.4S with mechanical injection only put out 190? The Euro 3.2 puts out 231 bhp and thats with stock exhaust and catalytic converters. I'm running 914-6 heat exchangers and a bursch muffler. |

200-210 is a guesstimate, but it shouldn't be any less than that. It's a 2.2S with 2.4 crank and rods, MSDS headers and a factory sport muffler. FYI, Bruce Anderson's bible got almost 210 hp out of a stock 2.4S with the sport muffler, and the CR on my engine is significantly higher due to the 2.2S pistons. By the way, all 2.4S's came with mechanical injection. Only the ROW 2.4T engines had carbs by that point in time.

Thanks for the clarification.
I'm not that familiar with the 2.2 and 2.4 since I have never owned one. I just remember an old list of stock hp. 190 for the 2.4S and 210 for the 2.7RS. But you are correct. Those numbers are for stock motors with stock exhaust. I have read Bruce's book, but I skipped to the 2.7, 3.2 and 993 sections . I have never read the sections on the smaller motors. Do you have any problems with the motor pinging on our gas? Steve

I don't know where else to lighten it up at. I think the 2.7 rev-ed more freely since its a smaller motor. It was also a US spec carrera motor. I was told the US spec carrera motor had different cams than the standard US S motor which gave it more hp in the higher RPM range. I never had a chance to verify this. I am quite happy with my Euro 3.2. If I was to put another motor in my car it would be a 993 engine so I don't have to adjust the valves. At the time the 993 engines were going for $10k and my motor cost $5k. 231 HP versus 285 HP was not worth $5k diference.

Yep, that looks like it's had some weight shaved over the years. Mine is still daily driven, with carpet and seats.
