Different Mirrors for 914?
I have a '71 914-6 conversion and I am in the process of repainting the car. I have the stock 914 mirrors on both side of the car. Personally I think the mirrors look OK and are terrible to see out of. I would like to get something different and am willing to trade my mirrors for something else. Any ideas of what would be good and/or if someone has an interesting trade for my mirrors? I open to anything.

One of my cars and a freinds 914 came with "Mini-Tornado" mirrors. They are a black plastic with a larger base and a tinted larger mirror. They are also fairly cheap, around $35. I CAN'T STAND THEM, they were one of the first things to come off the car. I'll admit it was not because they functioned badly, I just think they look ugly. They also require different holes to be drilled in the door and the original ones to be filled. The two original mirrors I have now are pretty pathetic, I usally have to look over anyway. They are good for backing into my "car hole" (car port) so I don't hit anything, but are too small and vibrate.
Other options are to get the 911 mirrors, they look cool, some are electric, but they are about $200 I think. |

JP-
I heartily agree with you about the appearance of the Baby Tornadoes. My black car had these on it when I bought it, and they were also the first things I removed (and replaced with stock mirrors). This operation didn't require filling of any holes, however, since my B.T.'s had adapters that were bolted to the fenders with the stock holes, and then to the B.T.'s with their own holes/screws. The only complaint I had was that some abrasion had existed between the mirror base and the fender, slightly marring the paint. Careful use of polish removed this, however. Anyone contemplating the installation of the B.T.'s might want to bear this in mind, and make sure the underside of the base is free of grit, etc., so that the original mirrors can be replaced if desired. |

Thank you for the responses. My main reason for contemplating changing my stock 914 mirrors has to do with safety, not appearance. While appearance is important, safety is my primary concern. While it is true that there are other cars with worse visibility, that is of no real concern to me. Probably because I am spoiled by the added visibility/safety of today's cars, I want everything going for me as I tearing around in my 175hp 914-6. I also wouldn't mind updating the looks somewhat. This is a purely personal choice and I know people will have a difference of opinion. It's kinda like people putting flares and 993 or speedline rims are their cars. By the way, I think that looks great.
Based on the various response I have had, I am seriously thinking about going with Ford Escort GT mirros. They look like the 911 flag mirror but smaller. I am still open to ideas. Thanx again for the input. |
