I don't have dimensions or specs to test this... would getting a 911 stub axle and rear hub bolt onto a 914 u joint and fit into the trailing arm? i was just looking at some options and that popped into my head, as it looks like it will work. if so, why not? are the teeth on the shafts / u joints different? u joint bolt patterns different? if length is a problem, would using the universal shaft from a 911 work?

The splines on the stub axle and hub are different between 911 and 914-4. The 914-6 stub axles have splines to fit 911 hubs but are the right size for 914 trailing arms. Just try to find a pair of those...
Check the "five-lug conversion guide" elsewhere on this site for a bit more info. --DD

An early 911 Stub axle will work on a 914, but you have to use 911 hubs and 911 rotors. However, then your have a 5 lug 914 set up for the trailing arms J
There are many options from here. First, use the 914 CVs and then mount an adapter to use between the axle and the 911 stub axle (I have these). Not a bad option for cars with less than 200 HP. Second, use 911 CV with an adapter for between the 914/901 tranny drive flange. Again, I have these. Third, find a rare set of 911/901 drive flanges and bolt them into 914/901 tranny. Use a spacer btwn the 911 CV and the drive flange. Once again, I have these.

Erm.... thats very nice that you have these adapters,
but do you know any suppliers where the rest of us can purchase such items.....BTW did you machine them up yourself? cheers |

Thesey914,
A lot of folks find their stuff and just need the adapters. Finding the stuff is some of the fun of doing a project. I can find some of the stuff, but I do not stock the items (cost, turn around etc). The neat thing about the 911 stub axles is that the you can use 911 rotors and hubs without having to do any drilling to the rotor. The adapters are made by a machinist buddy of mine.

The parking brake would not work.
However, folks have figured out a way to attach a 911 parking brake on to the 914 trailing arm. Do a search on 911 brakes. And check out http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=64879&highlight=911+parking+brake

Can anyone describe dimensions / details on the adapters needed to hook the 911 CV's up to the 901 tranny?
I've got the ('84) 911 hardware slated to go on the car when the snow flies (or at least when the snow used to fly), and some recently acquired machining capability. Is the idea to adapt the 6 bolt 911 CV to the 4 bolt 901 flange? How thick are the adapter plates?

Summersled,
I am not sure that the '84 stub axles will work in a 914. However, the rotors and calipers will work. I believe that only the '73 911 stub axles and earlier will work. The 84 CVs may work with the early stub axle, but a different adapter may be required. I can have these made if needed. Yes, the goal is to bolt the 911 CV to the 914/901 drive flange. Hmmm. size of the adapter dempends on the length of the CV. If the car is jacked up and there still is a small amount of play side to side, the adpaters are the correct size.

I have all the '84 911 hardware from the tranny flange on out - CV's, axles, stubs, and hubs, so there won't be any spline compatibility issues. The assemblies appear to be the same length (based on the old hold-em-up-close test), so the only other question would be the 911 hub's compatibility with the 914 wheel bearing, which appears to match also. So if I'm lucky, just need to whip up some adapters. Anybody done this kind of swap?

John,
The 914 wheel bearing may be the issue with the 84 stub axle. I have not confirmed this, but should not be too hard to measure the ID & OD to determine if they will work.

911 half-shafts (the shaft between the CV joints) are shorter than the 914 ones. I'm guessing your "hold 'em up" tester may need a recalibration...

Dave, thanks for the heads up. Assuming the wheel bearing thing works out, that shorter-ness should provide some room for the adapters.
