944MAX chip install
Just a fun little note.
I finally installed my 944Max chip this weekend. It has been sitting on a shelf in the garage for at least 4 years! Not even sure which version it is, maybe V4 or V5. Anyway, just drove it this morning, and was immediately impressed. The low/mid range is so much smoother. Third gear is now very usable in slower corners where I formerly needed to downshift into second for decent acceleration out of the corner. The transition from no power under 4k to power over 4k is also smoother. I guess it just feels more drive-able and more modern. My ears might be playing tricks on me, but it sounds meaner too.... Couldn't get too crazy since it is snowing (but not sticking) and I have my summer tires on. I imagine it feels more like the ROW cars do. Next will be the MAF and cam key when I change the cam belt.

Just curious if there is any equivalent product for my 1984NA? Thanks, and greetings from N. Idaho. Oh, and great taste in vehicles! I had a 74 Spitfire I installed a 73 GT6 engine/trans in - fun!

Greetings to Idaho. Coeur d'Alene is quite pretty, and you are so close to a real used car/parts market!
I think I read that you can chip the earlier cars, soldering involved(?), but I can't say that for fact. It is still a bit confusing to me anyway, with my car being a 24 pin, later cars being 28 pin, and some saying the chips don't really make a difference is the later 28 pin cars. I actually bought a Wilks chip used for my car about 9 years ago, never installed it, though. Spit6's are fun. I had a 78 spit before the GT6. Always wanted more power in that thing. Now the GT6 is completely stripped down to the frame while I slowly contemplate the work required to rebuild it

Maps are same in 24 or 28 chips. So aftermarket chips will make same improvements.
Easy way to chip early cars is to get late-DME with removeable chip and matching late AFM |

I've had a 944 MAX chip in my RoW '86 944 for several years and I can happily tell you it makes a huge difference in drivability for our cars too- smoother idle, fast revving, better part throttle and full throttle maps. The stock tune on the RoW 944's is just as conservative and old-school but for our spec.
I bought mine from Russell Berry before his chips migrated to LR, so I was able to tailor it more to my car- RoW compression, 98 RON and redline increased 500 rpm.

ewalt,
Wow, that's indeed an ambitious project. I think that body is one of the most handsome British cars ever built, frankly. A few Astons, the TR3/4/6's, the XKE certainly, one series of the TVR, the Jensen Interceptor and the GT6 are in a class by themselves. I guess the MGB GT as well. I like to drive our 944 on a loop from CDA up to Sandpoint, over to Whitefish and back to the 90 once in a while just for a great variety of scenery and a way to spend a summer day I enjoy. You are not too much off that route, and I may reach out to you one day this summer just to say hello if that's of interest. Regards, Doug

You said it. My plans have gone from all out modification to restomod to restore, and back again a few times. Decided to keep it simple and rebuild it near stock, then play with mods down the road rather than try to reingineer it right from the get go.
NW Montana and Idaho is quite beautiful. Great driving too. We camped up in Yaak last fall, and the the colors of the Larch were pretty spectacular. I would love to have the time to just tour it in the 944. Maybe someday. I spent a fair amount of time when I was younger riding my motorcycle all throughout the area, then later camped it in my Westfalia.

Sadly saw this posted elsewhere that Russell Berry, creator of the 944MAX chip and other 944/951 tuning products passed away after a motorcycle accident on Thursday.

Man, that is unfortunate. One second you’re there, the next second you’re not.
Was the 944Max chip still in production? If so, are any available currently? |
