This is after all a 924/944/928 techical forum. Of course there will be more chatter from the 944/951 crowd because of the plethora of 944's on the road. We hear from 924 owners frequently. I see at least as many 928's on the road as 924's, so where are all you 928ers?

Well I always thought that the title of the forum was a typo and should have said 924/944/968... after all, there is a 928-only forum.
I kinda understand why 944 owners are in abundance here and there is nary a 928 to be seen... the 928 was more of a status-symbol car than a TRUE enthusiasts' sports car like the 944. The 928 is a luxury grand-tourer that just happens to be fast as hell, whereas the 944 is more of a lightweight sports car in the classic sense - a blast to drive even though it may not be roomy or comfortable. Every Porsche had its competition in the market - e.g. the Carrera is up against the Corvette and NSX, the 911 Turbo is up against the Ferrari 360 and Viper GTS, etc - but the 928's competition was always against sporty luxury coupes like the Jaguar XJ and the Mercedes S and SLs. The 928 might be an awesome car, but it is understandable why the owners (probably mostly older Porsche owners) aren't as ferverent about their cars as we 944 owners or the 911 owners. |

Ferrari Daytona! The 928 is kind of like a modern day Daytona. It packages brute power in a very well done package not larger than a Daytona. With a 5 speed the execution is not far off. The aluminum coach work is far better than the Italians and the front end reminds me of the Miura I had 15 years ago. It handles better than the Miura. Parts are easy and even cheap on the used market. There was a day when I had $1000 - $3000 used Ferraris. Then the rest of the world discovered them and I was put out of the ball game. My S 4 does an honest 168 mph out of the box and I while I only did it once, it was rock solid. Damn good German Ferrari Daytona! How about a competizion 928 with plexiglass windows, racing seats, stripped interior, comp suspension, a real monster that given just a hotter cam could more than stay with the Daytona on any venue.

Why don't you hear from us much? Darn 928s are just so darn reliable that we don't have much trouble with them. They are so well engineered that fixes are real straight forward. They are really the first production Porsche that Porsche developed from a clean sheet in house.

Compared to Ferrari or Maserati parts today, used 928 parts aren't bad. I've seen used 16 valve engines as low as $650 in Hemmings and 32 valve engines in the low teens.
Bought the Miura for $7500 in 76. Painted it, did some some aluminum work and cosmetics. Drove as a daily driver for two years. Spent $34.00 on parts and lots of time on maintanence. Was tough to get $11k for it in 78. I agree that was a lot of money back then, but I got less than that in a real clean high mileage 89 928 S4. Dan |
