Alternate alternator? --Cross post from rennlist--

I've gone through an alternator on my 944 (turbo) in about a year (Bosch rebuild, unfortunately I didn't save the warranty papers). There's too much bearing play, and it makes horrible noises, so I'm wondering if I can use one from another car. There's been talk of a hyundai alternator fitting, I've heard that 924 alternators will fit, can anybody confirm? I'm also curious about efficiency, any help there?
Thanks
Ahmet

Ahmet,

I think I've read about Delco installations. One of those new little ones that are lightweight would be good.

Any idea which one, a part # perhaps, or which application?

I too would like to have an 'alternate' source ...

Does it come down to finding a match for the following characteristics?

1) Bolt pattern/placement compatible with current 944 alternator
2) Physical 'packaging' compatible with the current volume or space requirements (the thing has to fit under the airbox)
3) Ability to use same pulley
4) Wire connection compatibility

Do all alternators put out the same power levels?

Regards,

DL

Ahmet,

Don't have any idea which one, but I would use the one wire type. I think on 924.org a guy posted about a specific model. He ran the bat wire as it is anyway and the dash light wire, blue? off the fields.

Whatever model, there would problably be some adapting.

Check out powermaster alternators in some of the racing parts catalogs.

This I'm trying to do to save money, while "saving" power as well. Anything shiny and new I'd buy would likely cost more (right?), unless it's for a beetle...

dugcat11, all alternators do not put the same power out. Usually the more electrical equipment on board, the more the output of the alternator.

drew1, what's the one wire type? I'll look at the website in a few mins.

It looks like I'm going to grab a 944 NA alternator for now, I don't really feel like experimenting w/an AC delco w/out a confirmation of it's fitment. I may replace the bearing on my alternator, which sounds like may be the problem (the shaft can move forward/back, A LOT). Socal has suggested a source for the bearings, which I will look into once I pull it out. Problem is I can't stop driving the car, as at the moment it's my only car...

One wire type means 1 wire from hot post of battery is all you need for the alternator to charge the battery. It would be a good idea to run at least a ground, too, wioth rubber bushings.
