timing belt question
I am going to attempt to change my timing belt for the first time on my 83 944. Would anyone happen to have a list of parts that I would need to replace. Even unrelated parts that should be replaced, like the water pump. It has 185k miles and still runs great. Any links or any other information about this job would also be great.
Thank, Dave |

Not 185k miles on the timing belts????
Take a look at the full parts kits here at Pelican. Add a flywheel lock to it. If the seals are leaking then add the pin spanner to it as well as the seals. Many have reported acceptable tensioning using the Krikt tension gauge.

IMHO...
![]() Yeah, with a 185k I'd replace the water pump. You are already in there, so go ahead and do it now. You'll need water pump, gasket, and new thermostat. To remove the thermostat, you'll need some heavy duty retaining pin pliers, with the straight, or slightly bent tips. (90 deg tips won't work.) Everything SoCal said. If you do replace the Balance Shaft Seals, be careful, the upper and lower seals are unique, don't mix them up. Good Luck JM |

LOL, yes, very heavy duty snap ring pliers!!
I had a 90 degree pair, and I gave them a little bend, so they were about 60 degree. Then I tried to remove the snap ring, and both arms of the pliers bent out!! Very stiff ring. Quick question, where do the gaskets go on the thermostat? Mine came with 2, a thick one and a thin one, slightly different diameters too. The one that came out was the wrong one, waaay too big, and was crushed around the thermostat itself. Very ugly fit.

Last thermostat I put in had a U shaped gasket that went around the rim. Otherwise a gasket goes in before the thermostat.
I have a dedicated snap ring plier. No replaceable tips. Expensive but worth the lack of agrivation.

When I replaced my pump I bought a "kit" that included all of the nuts and bolts for the pump, the pump gasket, and a new thermostat.

All that said above plus the oil cooler seal kit and front seal kit.
I purchased a rebuilt waterpump that came with the thermostat installed from those "V" guys in Miami. Do you have any leaking at the oil pan? if yes add that to the list. If you are taking the machine down and gonna get dirty anyway might as well do it at the same time and check the motor mounts while under there. Rick

Do the '83's need the 24 or 27 mm wrench to adjust the tensioners?

Mine are dedicated snap ring pliers.. Well, now they're bent pretty bad.
My thermostat came with 2 gaskets... from the looks of the pics in the PET, there are 2 gaskets on it? On an 83... that depends when they were last replaced. They could be either.
