Is there any diffrence between a 944 transmission
and a 924 Transmission? My guess is that the 924S & the 944 are identical but the 924 will fit, but has diffrent gearing. Can anyone verify? I am currently looking for a good low mileage transmission to fit a 1984 944 close to the Los Angeles area. The best deal I found was here on this site in San Diego. If nothing closer pops up I'm heading south. But I did fing a pretty cheap 924 transmission locally and I am curious if this will work. Thanks!! |

Not all 924's are the same - make sure you're looking at a 924S tranny from the 2.5L car. The 2.0L 5-speeds (there's 2 types) may look the same (one doesn't at all), but smaller shaft size as well as different ratios means no go.
Yes, the 924S should swap in OK... not sure the gearing is any different...

Just a different 5th gear(desired) is all on the 924S or late 944.
Yep, you don't want the "snailshell" as I believe Vaughan is referring to on the early 924 2.0L. Dal

Later transmissions will go into an early car. May have to change/modify the trans mounts. Early trans can go into the 924S as the speedo on both comes off of the left front wheel.
The 924S trans will go into the early and late cars. For the later cars you have to add the speedo take off "gear" behind the left side output shaft. Gear ratios are another matter altogeather.
