Buy the 86 and rebuild the ass end as a Carrera GT.

Swapping the magor parts would be pretty standard, the wiring and engine controls would be a HUGE issue. Often guys ask about this, the best responce is always sell the na and buy a turbo. The swap isn't easy enough to be practical.

The point is if the N/A is stock, it needs a lot of work to come up to turbo standard. If on the other hand the car is fully setup (suspension and brake wise), then it is only a HUGE endeavor...

Re

Not worth you time and effort. Sell the NA and buy a Turbo. Much less of a pain.

If you got lots of time, it can be done. Yea, it may be kind of silly, but, it's your project right?

I'm nearly complete with my conversion to turbo and it has taken a while but it has been VERY rewarding seeing as how I've rebuilt it from the ground up.

My thought is its probably much easier than doing any of the V-8 swaps as seen below but many people with motivation still complete those. Almost all of the parts will bolt directly over since he has both vehicles. Is it an early or a late 85? I am not sure why someone asked about having the suspension all set up either because all of that can be directly swapped over as well. The wiring harnesses should be able to be swapped out as well. The only legitimate concern I can ever remember hearing about is the intercooler location but in reality I think that's a pretty simple problem to solve.

Id say go for it since you have both vehicles.

hi
i do the same with my 86 NA-convert to 88 turbo.
so i incorage you to do all the work on the turboengine before put it in your car because every work on the turbo is time consuming and you must put a lot of thing out...

Start with all the gasket and seals, the clutch is very important to be perfect for many years of pleasure!!!Take a look with a gauge for the turbo axial and radial play, rebuild if neccesary.

The electric diagram is very similar so the only complication is the auxiliar water pump.
The rest(arms, brakes, stabilizer) is time to rebuild all the busching-i put polybronze and polyurethane and is easy and fun to do.

You will spent time for put the intercooler and eventualy changes panels, front bumpers, wings.

For the transmission i encorage you to have a "weekend trip" tempo with NA unit because with a hard drive you will destroy the ring/pinion assemby

Try to find a good 944 s2,turbo or maybe 968 tranny in future.

I do this only because find a good turbo selvage and have the time to do it but when you started you will see many little trouble, rebulding, money spending....

Good luck, you will need it like me...

as long as the whole 951 is there (even if body is messed, mechanically sound) go for it, its not as hard as its made out to be; everything will swap over. someone mentioned the only problem being intercooler plumbing; you will have to remove the front badge panel if you have the early car which requires drilling spotwelds, only takes like an hour though.

..or you could swap your NA's backend to the turbo car..lol
