Interior Vinyl Glue

I recently replaced and adjusted my sunfoor gears, and to do so required peeling the glued vinyl roof back partially. I'm tired of seeing the unglued edges of my vinyl roof, and when I open the sunroof, it sometimes pulls up the weatherstripping. What glue would you recommend to glue it back up? If it's too strong, it will tear the next time it requires removal.

I was thinking Elmer's Rubber Cement for the vinyl and maybe some weatherstipping glue for the rubber trim.

Thoughts?

-Johnny

Don't use 3m. My tested opinion. Call a trim shop and get a quart if the brush on stuff and a couple of foam brushes. It easier to work with and lasts forever.

Never had a problem with the 3M, use it at the shop all the time.

I have. Repeatedly. Its good for headliner material cause it soaks in. Otherwise it doesn't stick very long. There is a reason they don't use it for much in a trim shop.

My advise. Calm your local trim shop and ask them. When I worked for Mercedes we used the good brush on stuff and I have a gallon in my garage cause im redoing my 928 interior right now. It'd much easier to work with a foam brush and put glue everywhere you want it an d no where else then to spray as well. I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it and im not trying to hurt anyones feelings. I've used 3m lots of times and most of the time it fails within 3 years or so.

That's what he wants to use it for, to reattach the headliner material. No overspray with the tube of adhesive. And it's light tack will keep from tearing the headliner material if he needs to repair the sunroof mechanism again. If you order it from the dealer, you get a tube of 3M (but WAAAAAYYY over priced.

The weather stripping around the sunroof does not glue down, it's one of those soft plastic/hard rubber coated metal things that presses in place, if it keeps coming up, just lightly squeeze it with pair of pliers to restore the grip. It is not glued to facilitate removal when repairing the sunroof or replacing the strip. A strong adhesive on this would most likely tear the headliner material when removing the stripping.

There is remnants of a thick white almost assembly grease like substance which obviously held my sunroof trim in place and I've removed and put back the trim and it still holds firm without actually "Gluing" the trim

Ok, sounds like I need to call a trim shop and see what they recommend. I'm mostly worried about it tearing, but I can easily always reglue. I might look into a replacement seal (universal cut to size because the Porsche part is pricey)

1300L, apply to both sides, let dry. Wipe with MEK before joining peices. Strong glue, Holds airplane de-ice boots on. I use it for everything.

EXACTLY, it's not an adhesive..you don't glue the sunroof seal (body side), that is an assembly paste, to ease installation of the seal at the factory.

Are you talking about the trim piece that screws on over the top of the sunroof gears (on a 924S anyway) - it's basically cardboard with vinyl glued onto it? Under that on my car there's a layer of thin vinyl that's glued directly to the car that covers the mechanism (so there's vinyl covering the mechanism, then a trim piece covering that.

The vinyl's peeling off my trim piece - keep meaning to tear it off and just paint the cardboard trim piece black - you don't look at it that closely most of the time, but it does attract attention with vinyl hanging off it.

Mike

Mike, get the brush on stuff. I paid about $8the for the last quart I bought. I usually buy it by the gallon. I don't know how many of these guy have done carpet kits or complete interiors but im doing a complete interior right now and my background is with Mercedes sl restoration. 3m is for heaheadliner. Not vinyl but cloth where the glue soaks in. Vinyl you will want to use a contact cement that brushes on and has some working time but when you are ready for it to stick it wont come off unless you really want it to. The stuff that 3mI makes in the tube is far better than the spray.

That's all im saying about it. Good luck.
