Leaking master cylinder

When I bought my 86 944 na in October of 2010, there were receipts from a repair shop indicating that both the master and slave brake cylinders had been replaced with new parts. I took my car in today for a state inspection and the mechanic showed me on the lift where the master cylinder appears to be leaking. Other than a failed master cylinder itself, what else could cause the leak?

Also, has anyone tried replacing their master with the steel version from 944online? Slightly over $100 compared to the aluminum version and allegedly fits both girling and ATE systems.

uvachief,

The clutch has a MC master cylinder and a slave cylinder.
The brakes have only the master cylinder and each wheel has a brake caliper.

Did the inspection show it was the brake or the clutch MC leaking?
My previous answer was related to a clutch MC and clutch slave.

uvachief,

If the inspector said it was the brake MC leaking, do you have an ATE brake MC or a Girling MC on the car?

The universal steel brake MC saves a lot of money if you have the ATE brake MC and want to go new.

It is a leaking brake master cylinder. I have replaced my clutch master and slave. Got any suggestions on where to get the new brake master cylinder or a good rebuilt one with at least a 1 year warranty?

I have not pulled the current MBC to determine iif it is Girling or aTe. I thought it did not matter if you were replacing with new. You could use either. Clue me in. I thought it only mattered if you were rebuilding your existing BMC.

The brake booster should tell if you have an ATE or Girling system. Otherwise it should be cast in the MC body.

I went with a rebuilt Girling Brake MC last May on the '88. I got it from Rock Auto for about $32 exchange after core return.

I have put over 2K on the car with no problems.

The "Steel" interchange for either ATE or Girling is new and it is available at Paragon and other sites for about $101.

A new ATE MC is available from Pelican for $190.

Okay. You mean take a look at the big arse sticker on the brake booster and it will tell me? I was under the flippen car for an hour the other day trying to determine Girling vs ATE. There is a HUGE sticker on the brake booster under the hood.

Anyone tried one of the Cardone 11-2117 remanufactured brake master cylinders? They are significantly less than the one on Pelican.

Cardone 11-2117 en route. By the way, the stock of these is super low. If anyone else out there wants one, you better get it soon. I'll order some grommets as well. Anything else I should replace while I am dumping brake fluid all over my face and garage floor?

did you know you can shoot out 6 quarts of new oil in less than 10 seconds if you fail to check the old oil filter you just removed to make sure the rubber gasket didn't get stuck on the receiver and you install the new filter and new gasket on top of the old gasket? Won't make that mistake again. Thinking of changing my screen name to Exxon Valdez after that incident.

If I can get my lower left control arm and bmc done this coming week, Nikki is going to Hershey and into the car corral with a for sale sign on her. I've got $24k into her but if someone wants to give $8k, she is gone. Of course that owner will put 25k miles on it and not spend a dime. I can't seem to go 1500 without pulling my hair out. If you are going to the swap meet, I'll see you there.

I hope you own a Motive Brake Fluid Bleeder!!
If not, your next posts will be--"HELP! I do not have any brake/clutch pedal pressure!"

If you strong arm the brake fluid reservoir, you will break off the nipples underneath.
CA CHING!

Bench bleed the MC per instructions.

You should get a new "blue braided" hose to the clutch master cylinder.
A nice touch to show a perspective buyer when you sell Nikki?? .
EDIT: I see in your picture the blue hose looks new.

A couple months ago I rebuilt the front brake cylinders on the '87. New ATE Super Blue Dot 4 brake fluid. A few days later the rear drivers side caliper seal blew out and woke up to a puddle of Super Blue on the garage floor. Rebuilt the rear calipers and redid the brake fluid...

John you freak me out everytime I am about to do something. I may take to the shop as they offered to do it for $142.50 if I bring them the part.

Yes this is the Motive brake bleeder I use.

Rasta Monsta & others suggest you get the the European Black Label Motive Brake Bleeder:
Pelican Parts.com - Black Label European Power Bleeder Kit

Only a few dollars more.
