Difference in Thermostats?

I'm on the market for a new thermostat. Why...long story of me knowing nothing about these cars before purchasing one (probably an air bubble).

Here's the DL though, '84, going over old receipts, I have an updated WP
(95110602110), and with that the owner also bought the thermostat, seal and shim washer (I have the part numbers as well).

Here's the kicker though, the gap from the seal to the snap ring is 4.5mm so I would think I need to purchase the stat for the old style pump (944-106-129-05-M2) but on the receipt it has the new style stat (944-106-019-00-M2) fitted with the thin stat seal (944-106-929-05-M2).

Is there a difference in their mechanics or temperature? I also dont ever remember seeing a metal shim when I removed the stat a long time ago.

A good reference-read Clarks-Garage:
Thermostat - General Information, Testing, and Replacement

FYI: metal shim is only used with the 4.5mm thick thermostat seal----NOT the 2.5mm thick thermostat seal.

There are 2 different thermostats for these cars. i dont remember what the temperatures are or what the part numbers. If im not mistaken the activation temp is etched on the thermostat but its been a while since I have swapped one. As for shims, there was none on my 88 924S (944 motor). As long as it fits snugly into the socket you are good (I would say, but people will argue with that im sure). If you are going to change this make sure to get yourself a good set of snap ring pliers you will not be able to get the ring out with out them.

Regards
Dave

Yeah, I've seen several of your post John but I wasn't sure if there was a mechanical difference between the two stats or temp difference since Pelican only has information about the old style temp stamped at 80C which I'll assume the other one is too since it's stock.

I've removed the stat today (I've done it in the past with some good Craftsmen pliers). I just haven't found any info on the actually difference in the two stats just which is referred to which pump.

Could someone give me a link to a lower temp stat and switch combo for the updated new WP with the 4.5 mm. It got record high temps (over 100 for over week) last summer and I'd like to keep the car cooler this year.

There are 3 combos available, don't forget if you change the thermo temp you will need to change the fan temp switch to match.

71 thermo with 75 switch
80 thermo with 85 switch
87 thermo with 92 switch

Like 9FF posted, I use the 71* thermostat with the 75* radiator fan switch combo.

Depends on where you live. In AZ, spring, summer temps over 100* are normal.

I change the radiator fan switch about every 2-3 years. The contacts burn and I notice the fans come on later or stay on longer-battery drain.

NOTE: The 80* thermostat/fan switch combo works the best for emissions testing.

Thanks for the link, I didn't know about that seller site. I will be getting that low temp combo. I live in Louisville which gets real humid and usually mid 90's, but my car is from AZ, funny.

I posted the AZ part site only because Pelican does not list the 71* thermostat.
