Alternator question

In the process of having my waterpump changed the mechanic noticed the bearings in the alternator are not that healthy either.

Is it possible to buy new bearings for the alternator or is a new or refurbed alternator the way to go?

Also I've been looking at refurbed alternators and can see there are two different ratings 90 and 115 amps.

My car is an 84, can I go for either option?

Thanks

You can get new bearings. Your mechanic should have not problem in matching an old to new.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-technical-forum/767617-what-correct-alternator-bearing.html

The normal part replaced is the regulator.

The part that is usually the most forgotton is the "slip ring".
The old regulator will wear a groove and the new regulator brushes will not have a flat surface to contact with.

Add all the parts together and just get a "remanufactured" --most parts replaced rather than a "rebuilt" --cleaned, painted, tested---parts replaced are minimal.

90 or 115amp?

I would go with the 115 amp if the same price in the UK. The wires on your '84 have built a resistance. You should actually change the battery "+ -" wires and the battery lead connectors.

Many go with the "Ice Shark battery cables or similiar. Top of the line.

The 115 amp alternator will not fit (physically) in an 84 944.

Thanks George. I did not know there was a physical barrier --shape to prevent using a 115A alternator on an early 85/1 944.

Is it possible to "upgrade" the exsisting early 90 amp case to 115A?

Thanks again.

Yup - 90 amp. The two alts are different, as GB stated. I also believe the pulley grooves are different... However, a late alt bracket should bolt up to an early block.

Bearings are a straightforward change over, as is the reg. if your slip rings are good and resistance checks out, bearings and reg will keep your alt going forever.

Ring to ring: 2.6 spec
Ring to shaft: infinite ohms

A other thought... Beware 6201 rear bearing. I seem to recall it not being the right depth for my 84.

I found an auto electric shop that was happy to do a rebuild. It was less than the cost of a rebuilt off of ebay. Since it is a Bosch alternator it is not as exotic as some of the other 944 sub assemblies. So far so good...

The late alternator should fit the early cars.... with a bit of file work.
I have an early ac delete bracket (they are all early) with my late alternator, and it fits fine.... a tad loose between the ears.

944 126 123 06 late bracket with ac
944 126 017 04 early bracket with ac

I replaced the bearings and voltage regular in my alternator. Unfortunately you can't do anything about the flip rings. They can't be removed... or I should say, I did not brutalize it and screw myself.

The bearings I pulled out are
6303 and 6201

Wait a second..... I recall Massive has no AC! if I'm correct, a late alternator will fit no problem.

I think I have the answer.

The mechanic should suggest a full FOES replacement and maybe new timing belt kit to go along with the WP & alternator replacement.

Early 944s have 5 rib pulley and the late ones have 6 rib pulleys on the alternator IIRC.
