944 a/c problems
I have an '85 944 and just had a rebuilt compressor I got from Pelican installed. The wrench had to jump/hot wire the relay to get it to run to charge. Problem being that it won't run when not jumped. Open to suggestions. Thanks, Mike

Could be a faulty pressure switch.
The system is not too hard to diagnose. You paid $418++ for a Pelican rebuilt compressor,
gave it to a "wrench" who cannot get it to run unless the relay is "jumped/hot wired". I have used a local AZ AC forum to get some information. Automotive AC Information Forum - ACKITS.COM J_AZ

shouldn't need to fiddle with anything if the switch is working OK.
the entire system should be under vacuum (25"+) before attempting to charge - when you crack the valve it will suck the freon out of the can, enough to run the compressor which will do the rest of the job. i just installed a pelican-rebuilt compressor a few weeks ago...replaced all o rings, receiver dryer, LP switch, welded leaky evaporator...had all hoses rebuilt a few years ago, and with my special condenser...cold air is life changing. |

rocket - who rebuilt your hoses ? Did you extract that one looooong one that goes up the fender & fire wall ?
Looks like a beast to get that out with engine installed. The guy at some major online AC shop kind of scoffed at me for wanting to re-manuf my hoses ... he seemed doubtful of doing the work reasonably, especially if the hoses were not visibly damaged. I have a new compressor and even a high efficiency condensor to put in this time, and I'd shore like to put shiny new hoses in there too, but hose replacement seemed to be out of reach. New switch was installed also..as I'm not physically able to do much any more I have to farm my work out. Thanks for the input. I'll pass all this on to the guy working on it.

The dash switches can be dodgy as well as the relay. Make sure it's the correct relay also.

i had the engine out of the car and decided to do it...local hydraulic shop did the crimping and had ac-spec hoses in stock. cost about $200 for everything.

Thank you..will do. Thought it might have something to do with the ignition switch..which I believe had caused the gauges to be intermittent. New switch seemed to have cured the gauge problems. Guess I sometimes over look the obvious as in the relay/dash switches. We'll see!
