FRIGGIN 911 handles that much better? You guyz think it handles better becuase it does or just because it's a 911! Is a 911 50/50?

As far as balance and cornering goes, a stock 944 has much better handling than a stock 911. 944 is a 50/50, 911 is at least 60/40.

As far as pure power - 911 wins hands down

it's the combined ratio of rear biased weight and horspower that lets them have the clawing ability through corners.......
also the cars may seem to drift, the whole advantage is that while the 911 appears to be drifting, the grip increases with throttle due to the bias of the weight, more pressure on the rears = more traction. keep in mind that the 911 is more at home at high speeds, where the 944 may be slightly quicker at say an autocross. you really need to put a 911 on a track to fully appreciate it's capabilities, then you will completely understand

In the hands of a beginner, a 944. To someone who understands the laws of physics and how they relate to driving, and has had time behind the wheel to master its characteristics, the 911.

"In the hands of a beginner, a 944. To someone who understands the laws of physics and how they relate to driving, and has had time behind the wheel to master its characteristics, the 911"

Thats is flippen funny!!!!

To those that are not sure.....you may as well read what porsche had to say about the 944/951/968 series from 81 to 93........

http://members.rennlist.com/944turbos/Porsche2.html

....and in europe.... during the years that the 944 series was in production 83-93...... no 911 to be seen..........

Autocar - Britain's Best Handling Car
This is perhaps the only award judging according to handling. Each year it choose a dozen of best handling cars, ranging from hot hatches to sports cars and tested them together on tracks and roads to find out the best one.
Comment: Autocar does not bias towards British cars, at least in this contest. But sometimes they missed some good cars due to availablility, so they just called it Britain's Best Handling Car.

2001 Lotus Elise S2
2000 Porsche 911 Turbo
1999 Ferrari 360 Modena
1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello
1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello
1996 Lotus Elise
1995 Lotus Esprit S4S
1994 Porsche 911 Carrera
1993 Porsche 968 CS
1992 Honda NSX
1991 Honda NSX
1990 Mazda MX-5
1989 Porsche 944 S2
sorry ..oooppss cut of the other segments with the 944S, 951 and 83' 944............

In the end.... the price tag does not make a better handling car ............

this is definitely true... and the comment re: an autocross vs. a long, sweeping road course is right on from my reccollections and you would also need to look at the differences at different power levels... 912 vs. 944 8V? and 951 vs 993 Carrera 2.... or something like that.

How about we even up the Hp margin a bit and compare the 944TurboS to the 911Turbo.
And if you think it takes a pro to make the 930 fast, let's give the keys to Derek Bell and Bill Adam and send them to Willow Springs!

Oh, that's right..........it's already been done =))

Just a hint ;-).............they were BOTH faster in the 951......hehe!

The 944 handles way better because it delivers neutral cornering at the limit with a softer setup than the 911. Nothing will beat the turn-in of a 911 under braking though, nothing...and I'd imagine nothing could compare with having the knowledge and skill to pilot a 911 through a corner at it's absolute limit, the 944 is too easy. That's why there's more emphasis on the driver of a 911 than the driver of a 944. In the 944's case it's often the car making the driver great not the other way around.

F1 cars have a 60/40 weight distribution. Any questions?

Nope, no questions, but we are taling a completely different suspension setup - comparing a 944 or 911 to an F1 is comparing apples to kumkwats

You'll also note that I qualified my statement by saying "stock" 911 vs stock 944.

Um, I have to disagree with this logic. Based on what a DE instructor told me when I asked him if an experienced driver can drive a 911 better in the corners than a 944. His statement was that the 944 is better, no matter what the driver experience is.

It's quite simple: a 944 is easier to drive through corners. Don't you think an experienced driver would be able to drive a car that is easier to drive better?

The 911 beats the 944 on the track (autox and road course) due to it's higher hp: we can't catch 'em on the straights! So, on road courses like Watkins Glen, a 911 vs. 944 (driver skill being equal), the 911 would probably 'win.' On a more technical (and less open) track like Lime Rock, the hp advantage is lessened and the 944 has a better chance against the 911.

Of course, bottom line: it's all about the driver! Anyone can learn to drive any car well. Seat time! Seat time! Seat time!

Of course, you can take a 911 3.8 and wedge it into the back of a 914, and viola! Magic on the track! (Too bad you didn't include more P-cars in your list, like the 914 and Boxster)
