Thermostat question

Are the thermostats between all 944, 951, and 924s models the same? I want to replace the thermostat on my 924s but I think someone has put in a later water pump making this task more fun. My wp has the white plastic cutoff peice on it.

matt, checking a few of your old posts, you are located in Canada.

Typically, a 180 degree is normal temp for a thermostat but the 195 degree is an option if you use in the winter.

measure the depth of the snap ring groove and chose the thermostat and gaskets accordingly.

it is wise to test your new thermostat prior to installation on the stove.

What are your thoughts on 160° instead of the 180°. My car sees alot of stop and go traffic during my daily commute and it's hot as hell here during the summer but is that gonna screw me up in the winter months? Yes I drive this thing in the winter I'm an idiot

your oil needs to see 180-200F to get rid of the moisture.

what is the depth of the snap ring?

thermostat temperature will NOT make your car run cooler.
a thermostat sets a temperature FLOOR for flow to the rad, but does not set a ceiling for max running temps.

if you're running hot, i suggest you verify your fans are working correctly, that all the plastic air ducting/dams are in place. also i suggest pulling the radiator from the car and "backflushing" it to knock sediment, rust etc out from the core, this will make a big difference in running temps.

The gauges in the early and late cars read slightly different temperatures. The 924S and 85.1 cars use and 80C thermostat while the 85.5 and turbos use an 83C thermostat. If you use the 83C in an early car the temp gauge will read near the third mark when cruising and if you use an 80C in a turbo or late car the temp needle will sit near the first mark. Just wanted to clarify this since pelican sells both and it might confuse some people. As others have said, there is no benefit to using a colder thermostat, your fans still need to kick on and bring the temperature back down when in traffic. I hope that helps!

Fans work fine but I feel they kick in late. Fans kick in litterly just before the red. I'm always paranoid sitting in traffic watching the temp gauge to make sure it doesn't over heat. I was under the assumption a cooler thermostat would solve this issue but if that's not the case has my thermofan switch gone bad?

No that's about right. My fans usually kick just past the third mark but the other day I was in traffic and it was almost into the red before they kicked on... the next time it was back to normal so it just depends sometimes.... so that's normal. Again on the later cars the red line was bumped up and the fans don't really kick on until the car would be in the red on an early cars gauge, so don't really sweat if you do get into the red for a moment. Just keep an eye out and make sure the temp goes down immediately or something could be wrong. Sometimes I'll even switch the A/C on to kick the fans on sooner. That said, I have went shopping only to come out only to my gauge a little over over into the red since the water pump stopped circulating coolant and that has never hurt anything. I hope that helps.
