if you don't want to buy the factory special 901 tool for the low price of $1150, the arnnworx tool usually comes out as the best aftermarket tool and is made specifically for our cars by a 951 enthusiast for $226:

Well considering I purchased the tension tool from our host, one would think that it would work on 944.

I actually tried the J.Kempf 928 cambelt tension tool and that almost fits. I'm considering retro fitting for the spring loaded tensioner. A recent '87 944 purchase for repair has a blown engine with that part.

So I've taken the 951 on a couple of long drives. To a paint and body shop. And then a few weeks later to dinner. Both times on the return home after shutting the car off for 45 minutes to an hour, the engine has starting stumbling. Slightly at first and then progressively worse. Could be fuel delivery or air/fuel mixture. I haven't heard the fuel pump getting loud but both times I almost coasted into the garage. I need to recreate the condition and check fuel pressure. I had a 280Z that would do this and that was a bad water temp sensor. Any other suggestions?

Perhaps an early car regulator (if there's a difference). That goes on the back burner for now.
I did find the solution to that window problem.

The track that's attached to the window bottom wasn't in the correct position. Subsequently the window lift rollers would come out of their channels in half closed position. The fix was to carefully pry off the track, clean both the window and the track up and then use adhesive to re-attach in the correct position.

I'm not sure how that track got into the wrong position. Perhaps that window was replaced at some point or it gradually "walked" through repeated opening and closing.

I had an 87S that the tracks on both windows had the goop become unglued, and the tracks either fell off or moved.

You are not the only one

Good catch, too!

I ordered a door from DC Porsche to replace a damaged door on my 951 and I had horrible issues with the window tracks and they forgot to give me the key for the driver's side door. Complete screw up on DC's part, but finally they shipped the parts they forgot, and I got a pretty good door with working windows, the install was a pain but doable.

My experiences with DC have been hit or miss.

I thought the engineering on 944 doors, window regulator, etc. was bad until I replaced window motor gears on a '87 Toyota MR2. Now that's some screwed up S***.

Nice car and nice job. I have painted the carpets in mine also … 87 924S, same color scheme. See my thread in the main 924/44/68 section. I bought SEM Color Coat in quarts and shot it thru my cheap HF gun.

I will be following this (and have a spare decent red sunroof if you’d like it. Postage might be tough from CT to TN. I has no hardware …. is an early one I bought for the manual latches.

Preparing for body and paint. Removed all the lights (except headlights) rear diffusser, rear bumper, gas cap, door mirrors, door handles, headlight covers and front header. I'm leaving the windows and rear hatch as the shop will need to store the car for a short period. The biggest part of the job is the right rear fender. That was in a collision at some point and a donor section had been grafted in. The metal work on that repair looks correct but the body filler was cracking. I'm having the shop remove the side molding and all the rock guards. It won't be a show car but hopefully very presentable.

Guards red looks great on Porsche sports cars. Hope yours works out ok.

remove that turbo emblem and don't just paint over it man. i used dental floss to remove mine and never reapplied it for a cleaner look and easier waxing.

Yeah, a few calls to them seemed 1 sided, but I managed to get something to work, won't go back to them though. lol!

One of my favorite Porsche colors.. interested in hearing about your respray experience and cost - mine needs it, so it's only a matter of time (and $$)

Keep the updates coming! =)

Not sure if I missed it, but if you continue to have a no start problem, my teenage son finally found and fixed an unusual issue on our '86 N/A. I mis-diagnosed the issue a few years ago as the alarm...did the jumper bypass thing and the car was OK for awhile until it wasn't. Recently we noticed that pulling the DME into the footwell, taking the loom cover off, and systematically touching/gripping wires could both assist in starting the car and (this is key) stalling it out once it was running. The wires make a sharp bend at the DME connector and we decided the cam position sensor and speed sensor wires must have been broken (or breaking) around this bend. Replacing these specific wires for about 18" and back to the connector at the DME seemed to do the trick and the car never fails to start now.
Looking back, I think pulling the DME out dozens of times during earlier troubleshooting "fixed" the open connection issue temporarily and was leading to many false diagnoses.
Might be something to check into if you have more issues.

I agree with that. My '87 944 N/A does the same on the speed sensor harness. It was missing the connector bracket at the back of the cam tower. I installed the bracket and secured both reference and speed sensors and that seems to have solved the problem.

I've replaced the complete speed and reference sensor harness on several 944/924S and they always start easier and run better after.

I installed a mocha brown interior from a recently acquired '88 944 parts car. That one was terribly abused but the interior cleaned up very nicely. I've moved the seats, complete carpet and most of the interior trim over to the 951. The only piece that didn't come out well was the headliner vinyl that goes around the sunroof opening. That parts car also has a brown dash that I'll be moving over. Less cracks than the black and sand dash in the 951 OE.
