ok so ive been looking for a 944 for a while and finally found a turbo in my price range so I looked at it. it seemed to run fine and although there were some cosmetic imperfections, i thought all would be well. fast forward to when i have to bring it home and about 20 mins into my journey, my tire shreds. it looked like someone took a knife to the sidewall and just cut the tire off. when i finally got it towed home, i attempted to put the spare on and i wasnt exactly sure if it was supposed to fit on the back tire because it seemed to be very close to the caliper. anyway after i had very mediocrely put on the rear tire (did not put it on all the way), it looked as if the tire were pointing inward. could this be an extreme alignment problem which caused my tire to shred? i dont think the axle is bent because it didnt seem to ride weird. could this be the tires dry rotting and just disintigrationg with the highway speed i was going. Really not sure and hoping i dont get burned on this.

Pointed in? I would say flush with the rear quarter depending on your alignment/stance/rideheight. Pictures from the back and looking down over the rear quarter wheel well should give us a decent angle. "Really not sure and hoping i dont get burned on this." Ah, I hope you did your homework before buying. There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche. Post and people will help. |

I bought a 951 about 6 months ago that had been stored. The tires had dates that were beyond 7 years and that was pretty scary so one of the first things I did was to re-shoe the car with new tires. Sounds like you've got the same issue. Look at the date code on the other tires and you'll likely see that they're ready to be replaced. If you're unsure about reading the code, go to google or visit a local tire store.

![]() Don't buy a 30 year old car and expect it to not need love, time, and money to get it working, especially porsche's. 944's might seem a cheap sports car and you think you look all that, but you better have a decent reserve of funds available, or be able to do plenty of your own wrenching, otherwise your up the creek when something inevitably will need fixing. This is why 944's are still somewhat low in value, people beat the piss outta them, never fix anything because the cost to fix whatever is wrong with their 944 cost more than the car is worth, and don't have the spare $$$$ lying around to fix it. Poor 944 resale value is what we get. At least my 951 will hold its value as more and more sub $2000 944 finally bite the dust and get crushed/stripped for parts. |
