964 Headers & Exhaust
What are you using? I am on a stock heat exchanger and B&B exhaust. I know something has to be better than what I am currently doing. Pleae tell me what you have.

Please define "better"; are you looking mostly for sound, HP, weight reduction, etc.
I have ceramic coated race headers with no cats, no heat exchangers, and a Magnaflow muffler. Runs and sounds great, is a bunch lighter, but it is obviously not street legal.

I am not concerned with street legal, just weight, HP, and then sound...However I am a whimp and I like heat.

There's not much out there

B&B
GHL
993
Schnell
FVD
All have one or more issues that range from cost to confiuration. I have used B&B on mine, issues are cost, don't use a B&B muffler, heat outout is on the anemic side but it does take the chill off even on sub zero days.

Bill isn't the 993 close to equal length ? My brother got a GHL and has had a few weld issues. I have a B&B exhaust that I would gladly replace. And I am not familar with the others. The heat I am looking for is the minimal kind. It's those frozen early am's that get me numb.

GHL headers and muffler, no weld issues. Very nice sound and noticeable change in driving acceleration.

The disadvantage of the rear muffler is weight if you use one of the big susage types, or noise if you use some of the smaller aftmarkets.

OK, so I should be looking to relocate the muffler to the side as opposed the rear?...without the space do I have an alternative?

a 964 has more room in the fenders than a 911 but still not enough for mufflers.
I would use B&B headers into a lightweight cross flow muffler of your choice. The muffler should be as light as possible because weight hanging off the back is relatively critical to minimize. Something like this or this, only using Coast mufflers

Bill thank you so much for the education. I would prefer a crossover muffler as opposed to the Coast or Supertrapps. On th e1st photo it looks like GHL but on the 2nd, is that Timmins headers?

I agree with Bill. My wrench wanted me to get B&B headers with a non-B&B muffler for a more free-flowing exhaust. Apparently, the 964 is much more constrictive compared to a 993. If you care about heat, B&B will probably not be the greatest.

The second is TRG headers w/o heat.

I'm doing the 993 heat exchanger mod at the moment. The car is supposed to be ready to pick up tomorrow and hopefully, I'll catch it while it's still on the lift, so I can take some pictures of it. It's a street car, so keeping heat was important to me.
I'm running 1995 exchangers with the 1995 cat...straight out. Muffler bypassed. They fired it up last week, when it was basically mounted (been waiting on heater tubing and tips for the tailpipe portion of the mod)...it sounded waaaay mean. I think it'll need to get on the dyno for a remap though....this is a pretty significant difference in the tuning of the motor. My understanding through research and speaking with Joel Reiser (PCA National Tech) is that the big difference in power between 964 and 993 was in the exhaust.

993 Factory HEs are nice quality and allow for heat. My hybrid engine, 964 bottom end, 993 heads, 993 ('95) motronic engine management dyno'd at 273 RWHP (6100 rpm) and 275 ft lbs max rwtq (4600) on pump gas.
The exhaust is by M&K for an early car. Doug
