1984 Carrera for $22k - Money Left on The Table?
How much money do you think was left on the table in this deal yesterday:
http://http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/1013384-84-carrera-w-transmission-prob-22k.html I saw this and thought it was one of the better deals this year. I am sure than putting around $5K to $8K into it would make it a sound car. Once again, I should have saved my money and did what I did. |

There was a little meat left on the bone but not more than a grand or two.

hard to say...if it was a decent car and not needing too much work then a great grab. If it needs much of anything then Matt is right...maybe 4-5k left on the table?? So in short if you are the end user then yes it was a very good buy!

I was surprised at first. After thinking about it more, I could easily sink $15K into that car, especially if the trans or top end needed any attention. Then it would be a $37K car.... Same old story.
We once said, “every 911 is a $20K car.” Now every 911 is a $40K car. In a perfect world you would have time to do a leak down and full PPI. If the trans was perfect and engine given a clean bill of health, then it may have been a good buy. However, as we all know the list gets pricey fast. At that price I would assume to spend money on suspension, brakes, tires, exhaust, tune-up, maybe an axle or two just to make it reliable. Then, as I could not live with that interior, that would need to be done. All this and a few more grand for unexpected rust, electrical, or whatever issues and you are in deep just to make it a reliable runner- not even touching the paint.

Yep. I just spent $10k prepping my 86 for sale. It goes quickly once you dig into a car.

I wasn't going to say anything, but 2nd gear could be just some coupler bushings and a driver who shifts it 1000rpm higher. This car might have been well bought if the gearbox doesn't actually need work.
The thing is I am skeptical about the mileage being real. That makes me think it likely does need a gearbox refresh and why I didn't say something previously.

Yes……
As a driver this 84/915 is easily a $34,000 to $36,000 car. This would have left $12,000 to $14,000 for sorting and profit for someone who wants to flip..... Conservative: gearbox refresh: $3,000, service & misc: $5,000 this would leave a $4,000 to $6,000 profit. DIYer might even show a greater margin..... |
