Worth of this 3.2 915 trans?

I bought this over X-mas and spent days cleaning it up. Thought I might use it, but now will sell it here or horse trade it for restoration parts I need.

Bought from dismantler, remote area and old friend. Probably from a wreck, but sitting outside top a pile of Porsche trannies, the number too corroded to read. Still, oil was clean and full -- a little sludge at the bottom. No LSD, but seems to turn and shift ok.

I put new axle seals and side plate O ring into it since I had the parts just laying around. Axel flanges are 108mm, so maybe a 1985-6 3.2? I learned that from one of Matt Monson's posts while researching. Is it just a core, or is it more?

Thanks a million,
bernie

That’s an early mag case. 72-73. Should be 7:31 ring and pinion. Mechanical speedo drive and non-removable mainshaft guide tube. No cut out for 3.2 dme either.

What’s the condition of the ring and pinion?

Not sure about condition of ring and pinion. Don't know jack about transmissions so can't dimantle any further than what you see n the pix. . I'd be worried bout screwing something up!

You took off the cover to access the ring and pinion. You have a picture of the back of the ring gear with the carrier attached. You need to take it out of there and look at the condition of the teeth on the head that sticks down into the case once it's removed. It will have either 8 or 7 teeth. Value is 100% dependent on the condition of that one part.

I'm up in the mountains now, but within a couple days I'll try it. Got a friend who will do a leak down test on an engine for me. He can coach me through it. I'll take pix then and get back.

Thank you Matt!!

If you were told it's a 3.2 915, you've been scammed.

Both early coarse spline and late fine spline are 108mm. It's an easy mistake to make.

In all actual honesty, while there looking at it, the seller thought it was out of a mid eighties carrera. I told him i think its a narrow early seventies. Neither of us really cared? It was only about the money side. When he gave me his price, I loaded it up in my Honda Va mos turbo 660cc van and was on my way back to Kobe. Like I said before, when someone gives you a horse, you don't go look at it's teeth.

So Matt, did the leak down test on the 3.8 yesterday and all good! My friend told me yeah, just pick up the piece out of the transmission. Didn't know it was so easy, like picking up a dollar off the street, though a lot heavier. 5 hours ago I did it. Sending pix shortly.

Thanx!
bernie

Matt, pulled #s where seen, written on the table. One pic of corrosion on bottom case, rendering unreadable part no.

Yes it is, but that can be changed. You can't change the guide tube type. It's definitely a 72-73 box based on the case.

It looks pretty immaculate with a really nice 7:31 CWP set. I wouldn't sell it for less than $2500 and you might even be able to get $3k out of it if you are willing to wait a bit.

Thank you so much for the great expertise and gear head passion that you embody. I sincerely do appreciate your generous help and advice. If I can sell it, make some money, I'm going to buy you and your family an exquisite dinner... when the time comes. I won't join you however due to the time zones and distance.

Thanks as always Matt?

Best
