88 g50 BAT result from 7/9/19 - $40k. Thoughts?

This seems like a great buy especially considering 7’s and 9’s and limited slip and miles condition.

Did this guy steal this or have prices on G50 cars softened significantly?

Wow.... I was asleep at the wheel. I would have bought that car for that sort of price.

Although the car had 102k on in back in 2012. Now it shows 103 and change. Supposedly was stored for just 18 months.

On a second note..... the more I look at this car, the more I don't like.... Its not a bad car but as I study the photos more closely, the more it looks like a $40k car.

Painful for me to admit it but I think the buyer got a steal. I stoped bidding at $39,000 solely because black is not my preferred color but I'm regretting it. Some deals should not be passed up and with an extra set of Fuchs that could be sold... I missed out.

My search continues...

Forget the color, buy the condition and price first, color last. You'll go crazy hunting for a specific color. I spent a long time looking for a Cassis Red car. Took a really long time to find and buy one I liked. When it came time to sell it was a poor choice and a hard sale. Having owned so many of these cars I should have known that color is not nearly as important as price vs. miles vs. condition.

The thing that still makes this black car a winner is the set of 7 and 9 by 16 Fuchs. That's $4500 worth of wheels there, plus if all that work they list is documented then the car should be a good driver.

Agreed. I had a temporary brain fart and forgot all about the wheels until after bidding ended. Doh!

Poor representation held that one back. Looks like a decent deal at $42k all in but might be some surprises do to the lack of information on the listing.

There are things that bother me about this car, the paint on the rear deck lid is very odd to have those surface rust spots there. The mileage is suspect too. All in all with the 7 and 9's and the factory wheels, I think it was still good value at this price.

Seems on market for me, but maybe a bit low for BaT based on other recent sales.

Private party, 42K sounds right if it is as represented.

The milage is shaky and the car needed complete underside photos and a more involved seller for bidder confidence. The few pics of the engine and transmission look pretty nasty due to it being an East Coast salt road car from new.
It ends up at $42k with the buy fee. If this was a nice west coast car it would have sold for over $50k.
I would rather have 8 inch rear wheels. There aren't many 245/45 16 tires available to choose from.

I still say steal. You had an SC that went for $7X,XXX and many G50s into the mid-fifty range. This was a nice car that needs a bit of final sorting. It will make a good driver for many years.
IMO a value buy....

Priced where it should be considering it was on BAT. Reality is mileage is TMU, paint is driver quality, no mention of oil consumption, more importantly no mention of top end. It says the fuchs came from a 930, it doesn't say they are genuine. The list goes on but its a good indicator of how soft the market really is for 911's.

Great time if you are a buyer, not so much of you are a seller. Look at many of the bump comments on our own F/S section. Sellers asking for offers, noting they've had lots of calls emails but no one pulling the trigger. Another year or so of this and 'peak Porsche' will almost exactly mirror the 'muscle car madness'. The seller of this car did as well as he was going to and he got out with the best he could hope for. Unlike the dealer with the almost zero options Zanzibar red 996, who was insane not to let that turd go at 20k.

3.2L Motor and chassis rust questions always confuse me.....

Why is it assumed that a 100,000 mile 3.2 needs top end work?

I have owned four and have never had an guide issues or any oil consumption concerns. These are bullet proof....... renown for it....

I've had three and all of them needed top end work. First with 86 with 78k miles, second with 84 with 94k miles and third with 86 112k miles. All had been looked after and came with records and service history. There are plenty of other posts on tech related to the valve guide issue.

Rust i have always been extremely careful with my picks but I've seen a friends 87 that needed work, and there are plenty of ebay turds that need body work. Monitoring oil consumption and checking for blue smoke is part and parcel of owning a Carrera. If a top end hasn't been addressed i factor that into what I'm willing to pay. Same goes for an SC if the head studs have not been addressed. It's common sense.

Look at this fender lip, and the chunk missing out of the front spoiler. This car was driven up a driveway too quickly and bottomed out.

Wow what are the odds you would go 3/3 and I would go 4/4 and one of the motors was raced...

Rust tends to come from poor collision repair.

Matt: I always chew up my front. Part of a lowered 911 out in the wild.

You can also see orange peal on the front fender & door. The more I look at that car the more I don't think it was a deal.

It’s driver priced on a g50 Carrera and it’s a driver.

This really has become an interesting discussion......

What is a good value...... to me the equation breaks down to what are you going to do with the car...... I tend to ridicule Cars and Coffee type ownership and view 911s to be driven appropriately. So, I tend to lean towards good bones which could support hard driving. To me the intrinsic beauty of the older Porsche's (356 and AC 911) was the ability to rebuild to as new or desired condition.

In my book, the ability to buy a serviced (Invoice), solid (Carfax, galvanized 1988, 3.2L, G50), well optioned (R134AC, LSD, wide Fuchs) low mileage car (103K) at $40,000 is a very good deal (steal might be a tad overblown). This would allow the buyer roughly $8,000 to 10,000 to bring it up to the next level with out being upside down. (I believe an 85 Carrera sold for just under $60,000 with over 100,000 miles.)

Is it perfect..... no, but it is a 911 with potential that I would recommend all day long.....

My Sport Purpose style..... I would Cat Bypass, SWChip, fresh tires and install a factory sport seat for the driver side..... then a few little things..... euro lens etc.....
