915-g-50
I know, I'm late to the party...been away from my "puter"... Back in the day, when a truck load of P-cars would come in from port, we would walk out to the truck with a couple of big index cards and start copying down the vin, color, options etc. for inventory files. When the first 87 cars showed up, the only think I noticed was the weight increase...Funny, every year we would guess how Porsche would make the car quicker. Often times a mix of weight savings, power increase, aerodynamics or gear ratio changes. We were quite surprised to see them increase the weight.
Anyway years passed, and we didn't give much thought or attention to the difference between the 86 and 87 model. When we appraised or bought one, it was a $ difference of one year...No biggie. This continued into the 90's when the late great Bruce Anderson wrote another introspective 911 article, and decided to put a wedge between the 915 and the G-50. Many dealers were pissed, as he just reduced the value of so many customers cars and dealers inventory with the stroke of his mighty pen. Many of us called him the day we read the article and ask him if he started drinking again! His perception came from rebuilding the 915 transmissions on higher mileage California cars that had been on the road from 1972-1986. Of course he had seen fewer G-50's needing rebuild! They had only been around since 1987! Anyway that's how it started, and when the internet got into full swing it became an redundant marketing tool. Today, we rebuild many G-50's...The parts are more expensive, they require assistance of another mechanic to get from the transmission jack to the bench, take a bit more time to work on, and require a bigger hammer! Whats most important when considering a 911 purchase is not which trans...It's what the condition is. I enjoy 'em both, but when a 915 is properly set up, it's pretty slick to shift! |

Matt has been giving me good tips for years now. They have all been good!! He's never received one from me however. I was planning to give him a good one since New Years, for some good advice on a 915 tranny I picked up, cleaned up on the cheap. Seems I'm doing some horse trading, so I won't get cash back on that, but I won't forget all the tips I got from Matt over years. I will have a big fat tip for him when the time is ripe! Better sooner than later!

That sounds pretty interesting and very experiential! Sounds like Porsche did it fairly well both former and latter. I much liked your analysis. True Porsche loyalty you retain, and so do many, even I.

Tri Tip it is! PM me the loverland address and I'll be sendin a personal check 150 usd from NV local bank. Only 180 dollars in the account, so 150 dollars worth of Tri Tip is gonna go on the kitchen table -- unless you spend it on car parts with it on the sly. It's my pleasure for so many good tips over years. especially the best one over New Years!
Regards, bernie
Have you forgotten I spent 30 years in NorCal before I moved to NoCo?
Bernie, I participate here because I like the community. I expect no payment for my services.
Take the tip Matt. Its not payment, even though you are worth every penny! I've never spent a dime on you. This money is only for Tri tip block. It's only for meat! Period! Now PM that address, so I can send the meat money! Don't be bashful, just take the GIFT. Enough said, except that it is my pleasure, not to be repetitive. I already said before that i wanted to buy you and family a good meal. Get me that Loverland address today, I'll send the check out tomorrow! How's that for service? bernie

Smoking a pork butt today.
I don’t work for tips. Not since I was parking cars nearly 30 years ago.

Ever heard about the real McCoy? When I was still a freshman in High school, I took two friends out with me to check my traps in the bush. We were all family friends and fellow Baptist church members, Danny and Mike. Danny was a grade ahead, Mike a grade below. Out in the bush, Mike says should we show Bernie the real McCoy?? Danny said -- Shut your mouth! So I said -- Nah!...What's the real McCoy??
They proceeded to do a 69er on each other, and after Danny chased Mike around and buried the tip! I was just an innocent bystander, but I was advised to keep my mouth shut. Monday morning every one at school knew about the real McCoy! That got me into a fight at the park with Danny. I was winning because i was a freestyle wrestler and took him down, but his friends pulled me off, so in the end I lost and was out boxed in a fight at the park with the whole school watching. Danny is deceased since senior year graduation when rolled a Ford Bronco with a car load near Wilson canyon. To this day, I don't know where Mike is. Family moved away. All I can say is, when you dip the tip, it comes out brown! I remember that very well from youth, and this a true story!! bernie

Bloody hell Bernie! I didn’t need to hear that story.
I also use a Weber. I mostly use Apple because it’s what I’ve got. My property used to be an orchard 40 years ago. There’s still a few trees here and when we bought it 6 years ago nothing have been pruned in years. There’s was a ton of dead wood that needed removal to bring the trees back. I’ve got a decent little pile of it still. I do start it with briquettes, but once it’s good and hot I transition to just Apple.

I know that. I wanted my statement to come across as a question. Wondering if the locals have caught on the the goodness of a good smoked tritip? I finally stepped up and order an Old Hickory Ultraque last week. Should be here in two/three weeks. I’m done with the pellet and going professional smoker. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
