Grocery shopping is now a combat sport!

It looks like the neighborhood Albertson's here is going to have an early bird, seniors only time this Tuesday - maybe that will work out for her.

They are doing that in a lot of cities. I have heard that they are actually carding people!

I meant hasn't sunk in financially speaking. People will die, in every county, most likely. But it is being blown way out of proportion in terms of impotance. A few thousand deaths is tragic, sure. But H1N1 killed 15,000 Americans and we didn't shut down the world over it. Most people barely even knew about it. This isn't denial, it's putting things in perspective and not setting hair one's hair on fire.

What I'm worried about the lingering effects of a significant portion of the economy shutting down. You don't just flip a switch and it goes back to where things were. The medical side of things will be what it is. The financial side of things will be worse than everyone thinks.
If this is as contagious and deadly as it seems, we could see 15k US deaths a week during the peak.

COVID-19 is 100x more deadly than H1N1.
Anyone who compares COVID-19 with H1N1 must be dismissed as a ignorant moron.

Agreed, comparing a death rate of 0.02% to at least 1+%, no comparison.

This isn't SARS, MERS, H1N1, or the flu, it's more contagious and more deadly than all of those, that's why states are screaming at the Feds that they need ventilators and masks. This is not politics and this is not business as usual, the quicker people understand that the less people will die as a result.

Not to diminish your point any because its well taken however SARS and MERS have a greater fatality rate if that’s why you were saying by more deadly? Or more deadly because COVID-19 has all the makings to net much more deaths? SARS and MERS being as deadly as they were and not having hidden symptoms while being highly contagious allowed them to be controlled rather swiftly.

I hope this situation ends soon but from what I heard it’s believed that 70-80% of population should get infected before the immunization happens and there would be no vaccine for another 8-12 months ! The reason for shelter in or lock downs is to slow down the progress of disease so hospitals could catch up specifically with the shortage of PPE like mask, gloves , etc and also understanding the 4-5% critical issues like sever respiratory problems there are not enough ventilators to reduce mortality ! I heard some of automobile manufacturers are shifting to produce more ventilators and government just trying to buy some time before more people get sick !
I hope you all be safe

This is what I mean by people freaking out and being unreasonable. Y'all need to turn the TV off, go outside, get some fresh air. It's all going to be OK.

Italy had 800 deaths yesterday.
You might be safe in your rural farmland but that didn't apply to everyone.
Freaking out. Tell that to people whose parents are dead, you ignorant moron.

At this rate of spread, he's right. Simple math.

My friends in Florida are operating like business as usual, playing golf and socializing. Every one of them are over 60. It hasn't sunk in a lot of places.

Wait until they get people dying in their county. Maybe they'll wake up then. I don't get it.
Despite my optimistic comments and hope thus far, my wife told me domestic news today. Reportedly, a day or two ago, there was a K1 event held in Saitama (not too far away from Tokyo where 10,000 people attended. If you didn't know, K1 is like martial arts street fighting and extremely popular in this country. Lots of foreigner fighters too

Reportedly many Japanese nationwide were very angry this was held! So far Tokyo has been spared by this pandemic, just some other prefectures, especially Hokkaido being the worst. My wife said today if it gets into Tokyo (greater area of 20,000,000 people), the whole country will be f-cked!

The 80% is based on worst case scenario, homogenous mixing, which isn't real life. The more realistic number is 40%, and we'll take what ever we can get right now.

I don't watch much news, but I read actual facts and data from experts, not people on forums comparing this to H1N1, which shows you have taken no interest in this at all, just going off how you "feel" about it. This isn't an unreasonable number by any means, the social distancing will curb this possibility a lot but it is still easily a possibility. If 40% of Americans become infected, and 1-2% have bad outcomes, then we are talking 1.3-2.6 million Americans dying. 15k a week is probably undershooting it in a worst case scenario. The good news is social distancing will work so yes go outside and get some fresh air away from people, and I agree, we will be ok!

Here is a projection from Morgan Stanley. It's hard to see, but at the bottom left there's a note saying "40 year old por-SHAs exempted".

People die every day all over the world. We don't shut down the economy over it.

Yes, people die everyday, yes people die from the flu every day, but whats different here is we have a virus that is circling the globe that so far we have been unable to stop that is putting healthy people in the ICU and into coffins. Ebola was scary and dangerous, we all watched it on the news ravaging other parts of the world, but it didn't show up in your town, did it? Yes it is more dangerous for older people and people with weakened immune systems which are also the same people who are usually the ones dying from things like the flu, but this new virus is very dangerous because lots of people spreading it have no symptoms, and many of those catching it are normal healthy people and some are dying. This is new and this is what makes this so scary, because it could happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime, unless they stay in their house, that's why states and whole countries are locking down. But this should show you how serious the governments are taking this, they are willing to crash the economy because right now the only effective way to slow this thing is to keep people apart, there is no vaccine, no medicine, no 100% preventive measures, isolation is the only effective weapon right now, and that's scary, because we can't all stay in our homes forever. Minimizing this threat puts people's lives at risk, like all the people partying at Spring Break and then flying home and hugging their Grandma, just don't.
