Can't say I disagree with anything he said but pricing is what it is. Driver level G-bodies can be found for $30k or under, you just have to look a little harder than just a few years ago and be ready for repairs. As they say "there ain't no cheap Porsches", one way or another you get to $40 grand.

Guy bashes car to in the end say it's a magical experience and that he's not selling it. Bashing the A/C in a 35 year old car? Stiff suspension a problem? Less power than a Camry? Looks like the author should've bought a CPO'd 991...

Good G-body cars are not cheap to maintain and to keep in tip-top shape. Yeah some of these cars have too high asking prices from unscrupulous dealers but still... Sub-30k cars are probably worth more in parts too so that probably helps keep the values up.

There are plenty of other/better cars around if that's what people want. That's the good thing about life; it's all full of choices.

Hell, some new cars even combine performance with economy. Who'd have thought

I found that article a few days ago; the question in my head while reading it was "Why did this guy buy this car?". He's obviously not suited for Porsche ownership. He may find a BRZ or some other sporty appliance to be more to his liking.

I agree.....he is the BRZ or Miata type.

4 door chevelle’s & 4 door 57 Chevys going for stupid money, 15-20k, 1st gen Camaro 30k and up, I think the 911 is still a good deal of course the major down fall is prices of parts and service.

That feels like an article designed to generate clicks and arguments on Internet forums.

Vintage cars are inherently absurd prospects: outdated technology and performance, comical safety features, high cost and frequent maintenance, impractical modes of utilitarian transportation, etc... That said, none of those factor in to the visceral draw we and the author have to these machines and no price can capture what that’s worth.

I agree with Showdown. In the article, he says:
Quote:
If we strip back the nostalgia and focus solely on what on offer, it’s hard to justify the premium.
This makes no sense - the nostalgia is exactly why the prices are going up - you can't "strip back the nostalgia". No collector car is ever going to be as good as a modern car in practicality and driving experience - but that is exactly how they've reached "collector car status". It's the quirkiness and the fond memories of a past time that drive prices up.

Maybe nostalgia explains why a Chevrolet Blazer, 1985 I think, went for $85K on BaT last week. I can think of no other reason. Same goes for the old Broncos going for similar money. Logic has zero to do with it.

It’s not just nostalgia, it’s the analog connection and feedback that just doesn’t exist in the vast majority of cars. How many other sports cars give you that much visceral feedback to understand what the car is doing underneath you? The older Miata and maybe some of the older M cars and water cooled Porsche’s will offer a close experience but none have the build quality of the older air cooled. There’s a reason demand continues to stay strong and I predict they will continue going up. Yeah we may see a small dip if/when the economy cycles down but they will recover and continue upwards. As they say, they aren’t building anymore and new cars are quickly moving away from the driving experience.

And Porsche is well aware of this, this, they see what companies like Singer have done with an old 911 (with some extra sweetness thrown in) and the crazy money people are paying for the cars. In 2020 Porsche couldn't replicate this if they wanted to - unless they do what Jaguar and Aston Martin have done with vintage factory recreations (for insane money).

No car company can although you might come close with an MX-5 or BRZ, but the pedigree isn't there and the quality is lacking.

I wouldn't pay 85 dollars for a Blazer total JUNK.

If he hadn’t said he’s got an 87 G50 Car I would have thought that was written by Sugawood

Buying a classic car solely based based on price is a recipe for disaster. Condition should be your driving factor. You will probably enjoy the car much longer if you paid a bit more to get a really nice car...especially for a first timer. DIY'ers will fair better (on price) but will put the time and money to get the car right. It really comes down to what type of buyer and owner you are. There are a lot of cars that are technologically better and faster for the money but that is not why we own them. I for one enjoy the simplicity and the analog feel of the car. Are they perfect?...heck no! but I won't trade mine in for a new one.

I for one enjoy working on them. I feel relaxed whenever I work on a 911. It's already a work of art. Making it better cosmetically or mechanically is pure pleasure for me, always has been. When I drive it, the pleasure turns into a thrilling experience. It's a cycle that has no end.

Exactly. Lots of people trying to make a living off the Internet by recycling someone else's work and then putting a contentious title on it.
