Help Valuing High-Mile 87 Cab.
Hello Pelicans,
I'm looking at selling my high-mile 87 Cab; another venture has come up and I need the space/$$. Trouble is there isn't much out there for Comps. I'm current with Coupe/Targa pricing but there just aren't that many Cabs selling with either high-mileage or G50 gearboxes; let alone both. The car is a full-repaint and has a new top (prior to my ownership). Paint is good, not great (5-10 footer) Some solvent pop/dye-back present when you get close. Car has 201K miles; does not appear engine or gearbox have been opened up. No records at this time but I'm working on getting them; I've owned it just over a year and put 3K on it since. New clutch, slave cylinder and master cylinder. While engine out for clutch the engine was cleaned and all oil seeps addressed as well as preventative (cam oil lines, t-stat o-ring, oil pressure sender, breather cap, RMS, oil cooler seals, epoxy over all freeze plugs). Thoroughly cleaned gearbox, replace input shaft seal and shift shaft seal. New updated fuel injection lines on engine. Valve adjustment followed by compression and leak-down (170-180 psi and 4-8% across all cylinders). New engine pad, front and rear lid shocks. 4 new Continental tires. Oil change and brake flush. New belts. After reinstalling the engine the tunnel fuel-lines started leaking at the front; replaced both tunnel fuel lines with factory parts as well as the rubber feed line to the pump. Mechanically this thing is solid, needs front windshield/cab top seal replaced (wind noise) and the tan interior is dirty (especially on driver side.) Factory sport seats but they are starting to split at some seams and driver's bolster is hammered. Any input on valuation would be greatly appreciated; I feel like high 30s-low 40s given the current market? Thank you for your input. Last edited by PorscheTech82; 04-12-2021 at 07:12 PM.. |

High mile Carrera
It’s nice to see a well driven Carrera. It appears to be in good shape and well cared for and would it probably pass a PPI with few major faults.
I think there is still a market for high mile 911’s, not for a collector, but for an enthusiast who is looking for an interesting car to drive and enjoy without depreciation. I bought my SC this way 10 years ago and besides a few minor repairs (rebuilt 2 brake calipers, new starter, new ignition switch), it has been great fun. Since the car seems to be in overall good shape with decent paint, albeit a common color, I would reupholster the sport seats to get top dollar and have a full PPI performed by a reputable shop to put the buyer’s mind at ease. Most potential buyers won’t mind a few things to fix, but don’t want an engine or G50 problem. The seats might be fairly expensive to reupholster properly ($1.5k?), but I think they would really help the sale and easily recoup your expense. If the seats were repaired and with a good PPI, I’d say $40k give or take would be the current (strong) market. The coupes seem to bring a premium now, but who knows what the future will happen in the future (look at 356 convertibles). Make sure it drives good with no major issues and someone who wants a good driver will drive the car and buy it (that’s what I did). I think a cab is a nice weekend car that could provide much enjoyment and has a good pool of potential buyers. I also don’t think red, however common, is quite the detractor that it once was due to high demand, nostalgia, etc.. |

the way it sits now probably $35. recover the sport seats and maybe closer to 40 as that is one of the things a potential new owner can really touch/feel/see.

$35K - agree with @G450X, @Macroni & @cellison. I've run into a couple similar examples recently that sold for that amount. 200K mile cars, decent body & new tops and similar mechanical condition.
Paint condition (5/10) and seats are a costly negative IMO - probably $5K+ to correct the paint and do the seats properly. Seats are hard to get right. Either do it yourself then ask $40K+ or save yourself the trouble and have the new buyer tackle those areas. |

Thanks everyone for your input; all opinions seem to align with what I was thinking. It's been a great car that I can just jump in and drive without worry about "what-if" something were to happen. I drive a lot of air-cooled cars and it's amazing how tight this car drives and how hard the engine pulls; really speaks to the quality of these early cars.
Appreciate you all for taking the time, much appreciated. |

Another option on seats would be to find a decent used pair for 500-800. Perhaps from a newer Boxster or Cayman?

my opinion that would lower the value..... they could clean and spray those which would be a solid alternative...

Seeing what people are getting for 3.2s I’d ask at least 75k.
