1988 930 value help

A nice gentleman in my neighborhood who has a 1988 930 recently passed away and his son and widow know nothing about the car. They’ve ask me for help. We live in a remote part of West Texas and nearest service would be 4-5 hours on a trailer. Battery is dead, car hasn’t been driven in 1-2 years. I met him a few times when I had my black 997tt. An air cooled 911 is on my bucket list and I may make an offer or simply help them sell it. It’s driver condition at best unfortunately. Don’t plan to start it since don’t know how long it’s been sitting. 103k miles. Trying to add more photos, but files too large. Maybe someone could help with that?

Try Bring a Trailer historical sales, but I would jump on that car in a heartbeat.

I’ve look there and few other places. BAT has had a few similar year/mile cars bid to around 100 and not sell. They were cosmetically much nicer than this one. Guessing if I drag it out to the driveway and sell “as is”, with dead battery, it will go as a project… 55-60? If we take it to Dallas or San Antonio, do major service, find the leaks, deep clean and restore interior/exterior best we can.. it will sell for 90-100 based on similar, nicer condition cars not closing at 100? That will run how much?.. including transport. I’m guessing 25-30 to get it in selling condition if not much else wrong… but what if there is.

I'm assuming they can afford to spend the additional money? Are they OK with the amount of time it would take to get the car in running order and detailed then listed and finally sold?

JMO but short of doing all that sell it as is/where is here on Pelican. I would imagine it would sell in less than a day on the classified section here. You might not get maximum value but you would get minimum hassle. Motivated buyers would gladly pick it up, the widow and son would have to do nothing other than show them where the car is, sign the title, etc. You as well. (exception of listing the car here).

Hagerty's list a #4 condition 88 930 at $78K. If this car runs with a new battery then I'd say it's a touch better than a #4 condition car and not as good as #3 condition which Hagerty's lists at $149K. JMO but the values on the Hagerty site seem a bit high. IDK.
If you were Wayne Carini you could offer her $35K and steal it. Doesn't sound like you want to do that though. My gut says something similar to what you stated in the first post, $55-60K. I may be completely off though. Best to wait until more knowledgeable guys respond.

Thanks. The number I keep. Coming up with is 55. I need to sleep at night and I live in a small town with these folks. His grand daughter goes to school with my kids and his son in law coached their basketball team. Needs to be fair, but leave some fat in case there are issues.

I would offer $50k and then when/if you sell for a huge profit share some of that with the seller. There is no guarantee you'll sell this for ~$150k or more, and unless you're doing all the work to get this show and road ready yourself, you'll spend a ton of money getting there. I agree be fair but dont think its going to be easy to turn this into a big money sale. It is not going to be cheap to find the parts and specialist mechanics it is going to take to get the job done.

It’s would be going to John reeves in Tulsa and it won’t be cheap. I don’t plan to turn the car into a profit. I’m an enthusiast and an air cooled 911 is a bucket list car for me. I have a pretty nice collection going and this would be part of it. Probably keep it until can’t drive it any more.

The problem is assessing the current/probable needs of the car and what it may be valued at after. Spoke with two old school Porsche experts/mechanics yesterday. One is very up to date on price trends and he has come to the same basic conclusions discussed in this thread. I may add it to my stable

$50K- $55K would be a steal for that car. Pop it on BAT with a no reserve and AS-IS, the owners would easily get $65K+ for it. Even with the unknowns, if I was the owner I’d want minimum $70K to come tow it away. With the car sorted, an 88 g50 930, would go way over $100K. Car looks to be parked indoors so rust shouldn’t be an issue and that’s where majority of the restoration budget goes to these air cooled car.

I’m sure someone on the Pelican team would offer $65K and that should make both buyer and seller happy.

I will pass that on to the family. Several similar cars have only bid to 100 recently on bat and did not sell. One was a g50 with fewer miles and nicer condition…After discussing with a few mechanics and collectors, I personally, would not go over 55. If somebody on here wants it for 65-70 and cares to make the owner an offer, I will present it to them.
