parting out, is it worth it
I have a 72T it has some paint bubbles so I know there is rust.
Decision time. I think the car is worth $6k, but suspect if I sold it on e-bay it would go for $3.5. Maybe more (6 or 7) if it was bought by somebody who came to see it and drive it! Honest assesment, it needs a windows out paint off, body job. If I was keeping it I would do the top ends and then a leak down. The engine has integrity, no leaks. But I don't want to keep it (and do it) so will probably part it out. How difficult is this ? (frustrating !) I've seen questions like "Are your door panels and map pockets mint?" What planet are these people from, it's a 72, they could be good or fair, but mint! I would like hear your experiences. Also is there a price guide anywhere for used but servicable parts. As I think parting out is often made more difficult 'cos people don't state prices. (just MHO)

Parting out a car is a lot of work...but yes, you car probably has parts that could sell for more than it's whole, assuming it's as rusty as I imagine it to be, winter driven on salt treated roads, etc.
Also, the price on parts is a semi-science...it really depends on how badly the buyer wants the part, and the condition of the part. I would also suggest you save all good nuts & bolts, labeled well. Concours nuts are concerned about head stampings. Door pockets? Sure there are mint sets out there...here's a pic of mine. The difference? My car wasn't subjected to winter salt, the punisment of a daily commute. ![]()

It would be a shame to part out a car that could be saved. Also, T's will bring good money once restored so you should still be able to get a good price for the whole car without the hassle of parting. I'm not far and plan to be out with my car on Sunday. If you'd like I could take a look at the rust. I've been down that road and back, twice actually, with my '71T. Todd.simpson(at)comcast.net

Thanks for the info re pricing. My intention is not to gouge someone because they need that last peice of trim. My thought was that with prices it would make the process less painful. (for both) Todd, I realise T's have risen in price if done well and are stock. A few years ago top price for a T would be around 10 making them virtually unfixable, at least now there is a margin that allows good repair work to be done. Regarding Sunday, unfortunately I work at the weekends, it's possible I could get done early but I would not arrange a meet with someone if I wasn't sure of being there. If things change I'll mail you. Would be nice to get an independent opinion from someone that's "been thru' it" before. Jeff

You can get pricing advice from the Early 911S Registry site.
And if your door pockets are in excellent shape, ask $800 for the pair.
