Keep/Fix or Part out?
What would you do:
I have a 1985 3.2 Carrera Targa I have owned (second owner) since 1989. I have 240,000 miles on it now (I put on 180,000 of them). The car has been real good to me. Top end was done at 200,000, two alternators, a seized A/C compressor and not much else but routine maintenance. It is one of several cars, so I don't drive it much anymore (in the last couple of years). I was rear ended in the car about 5 years ago and was pushed under a truck bumper. I got two front fenders, a new hood, some new front sub structure, a new paint job (glasurit) and while it was being done I added a new dash, new windshield, new rubber in most places. I did drive it a couple of months ago and found a serious fuel leak up front - I am guessing the return line. It has me thinking of either fixing the car and driving it or selling it/parting it. What would you do? I am on the fence.... Mike |

Sounds like the car "doesn't owe you" at this point.. meaning its all paid for. Its a "luxury" to have multiple cars. I think there are 2 issues here...
1) You would get more interest and have less hassle if you fix the car and decide to sell vs parting out and the myriad "how much to ship part "x" to zip code "y" emails all day and worry about a few deadbeat buyers. 2) You need to decide if getting rid of the car would allow you to do something else? do you need the money? want to rid yourself of future maintenance? want to simplify your life? then yes, sell the car.

Thanks for your replies - I am prompted by my wife to get it fixed - she pushed me off the fence.
I don't need the car (one of 8 cars) or the money. I am somewhat attached to it just in the fact that it is the longest I have owned one car and there is personal history with it (180,000 miles with my butt in the seat). I guess it is coming down to simplifying my life. If I am only going to drive it a few times a year - why bother keeping it? On the other hand, it cost me nothing to have it sit and it is at the bottom of the value curve at this point. However, it is doing the car no good to sit. So I guess it is fix it and see how much I drive it... |

Sounds like a good decision, and in any case it must be cheaper and easier to repair the line than to break up what sounds like a pretty fair car.
BTW, being sensible doesn't always give us security, or make us feel better or more successful. Taking charge and moving forward with confidence does. Save an old friend. You will miss him when he is gone. |
