![]() I have owned a nice solid 72 911T European Targa for a few years. It was painted Seal Grey by a previous owner, as he did not like the original Signal Yellow color. I want to sell it, but having no success. I have almost $20k in it now (rebuilt motor, brakes, etc). The NADA Classic book gives it a low of $22k up to a high of $34k. Is it worthwhile spending $8000 to $10000 on a strip & repaint back to the original vibrant Signal Yellow color? The basic chassis is in exceptional condition but showing signs of needing a front pan in a few years. Do I take my lumps & just sell it at a loss? Len

Do I think you would get back the money spent repainting it? no. Do you "want" to sell it or do you "need" to sell it. If you need to sell it then you don't have much choice. Want is different. Want implies you can wait to sell when the market comes back, if you are worried about loosing money on a car that was an "investment".

I would say paint to keep...not sell....I find it very hard to believe that you could increse your asking price 8-10k and get it based on paint alone.
The market sucks.....can't do much about that. If you need to sell, it is what it is....if not hold for a few years and who knows????

sell it. Let the next owner take it to the next level.

There was an immaculate 72T Targa in light yellow that was advertised on this board several months ago for sale or trade. I saw the car in person and it was really in excellent shape with MFI, having been fully restored. Seller claimed to have spent in excess of $50k and I believe it. Hard sell, and he took a huge loss. My conclusion: A non-S Targa in less than perfect condition is worth less than $20k (a few recent no reserve ebay sales would suggest a lot less), and a repaint will probably return less than 50 cents on the dollar.

![]() Thanks guys, Guess I won't spend my savings just yet. The paint is decent, just....Grey. I would love it in its original color. Its a Euro model w correct 2.4 w Zeniths, but not numbers matching. My best offer to date is $15k. Would rather drive it & enjoy what I have for a while. I have requested a CoA on it just to verify what it is. I appreciate all your advice. Len

Len,
I would say 15k is a very good/strong offer. I have a Euro 72T in hard to find aubergine, numbers matching, recent bare metal paint, almost everything new or replaced and I would be happy to get anything over 20k. Eric |

I'm surprised that you have to spend that much money on a repaint. To me it seems like most things is a lot chaper in the US, but strangely enough not a repaint.
Here in Sweden, which is a unbelivable expensive place to live, I can have a very, very good bare metal repaint for maybe $6k. But, is it really worth spending that much on a T Targa? Over here we can typically have a good but not concours respray back to original color for maybe $2500. If you want to return it to it's former glory, maybe that is a better way to go? I can understand the $10k repaint on a concours car, but with a $15k highest offer I'm guessing you have a good driver quality car. And you will never ever get back anything close to the $8-10k spent. Thanks, Johan

![]() The paint work at Series 900 in Sunapee, NH is exceptional. It's the only place I will take a Porsche for paint or body work. They are Porsche specialists. I visit them often, I see their craftsmanship, and I trust them totally. Their estimate was $7k to $8k. Since nothing ever comes out on the low side, I figure $8k is what I would pay. If I can sell off some of my projects (964 Speedster, Porsche Diesel Tractor, 69 911S Targa, 72 2.7 RS clone, etc), I will go for the full strip & Paint back to original. Just too many projects & never enough time. Len

It's not just paint. Every bit of rubber, and most of the trim will look it's age with nice paint. Painting turns into restoration. Then it has to be perfect mechanically. How's the dash and the door pockets?
A guy buying a color change isn't seeking perfection, just a good price. Sell it as is unless you are in love. |
