Rat Rod

What is this worth?

300+hp 3.6L variram.......

I have seen quite a few hotrods. No holds builds to well thought out practical approaches. They are very personal and even ones that start on the cheap eventually work themselves up in cost.

I did sell my '72 3.2 for more than I spent to buy the chassis and build it, but I also chose to be flexible about the parts I bought and took my time and bought most everything at good prices.

What's in your wallet? Hey, if you are looking for a value priced, cannot be duplicated, iconic longhood, look no farther than the 71 Targa Luke posted earlier. I have driven thousands of miles with that car and a couple of track days. Without going into lots of detail, it is extremely well setup and turn key. You cannot go wrong with that car. PM me if you are interested and I can put you in touch with the owner.

I have a friend who will be selling an excellent '72T-based RS clone with a 2.7RS-spec engine. It'll be under $50K, but not much under. A really spectacular car.

to all, thank you. Send along any cars that may be for sale. I am interested.

The decision is getting a bit more complex. Drove a 69 912 body with a 89 3.2. Has the SC brakes and suspension. Got under the car and it does not have rust in the usual spots, though it will need another shot of undercoating. This one is asking $25. Body is good, not great with a few scrapes and nicks. This interior has carried a dog, so full of dog hair. Will need lower dash replacement, potentially upper dash too. Has Recaro RS seats. They will replace the large diameter steering wheel with a smaller one and put in a short shift kit. Has the 16gal 912 tank. The work has been done by guys associated with The Racer's Group.

I went back by the first car, the pristeen one. Made an off handed comment about the price and said I thought that it was more like a $45k to $50k car. He said make an offer.

So, dear friends, here is the dilemma as I see it. The 69 needs about $10k worth of interior clean up replacement (dash, gauges, carpet, door liners) and some TLC on the exterior which puts me at $35k or so. The 72 need nothing, though I would probably change the seats.

Thoughts?

The upper dash replacement is not trivial because it requires removing the windshield. That makes it a good occasion to replace the headliner, if necessary. $10K for everything should cover it nicely. What trans does the '69 have?

A key question here is: do you get enjoyment from doing work on the car yourself? If not, do you have a competent nearby specialist to do it? If the answer is 'no' to both, consider the "done" car.

Good. An early 915 will have a 7:31 ring & pinion, making the 3.2's 200HP feel more like 240, but with some durability tradeoff.

Here's the'69

Not nearly as clean. Been thinking that to make it look like I would want, there would be paint involved. Getting expensive now

Found a photo of my friend's car that he will be selling. RS-spec 2.7 engine, sunroof '72T chassis. Painted by one of the best shops in Los Angeles.

This is just a snapshot. Will get good pictures. This car would be under $50K, tho not much.

My thoughts are:

1. Nowadays, looking at hot rods with a $50K budget will get you into a pretty nice car. Good position to be in.

2. I would recommend buying a 911 hot rod over a 912 hot rod any day. You might end up with the same car in the end as far as powertrains and everything else goes but I think that there will always be an additional cachet to a car that started life as a 911 rather than as a 4-cyl. 912. JMO.

Cheers

d.

Tough call. My inclination would be to make an offer for the 72 after PPI.

On the 912 you can change the color, you can change the engine, the transmission, the interior but you cannot change that serial number and that is a deal breaker in my book.

Thanks Gents. You are mirroring my thoughts. Will let the 72 sit for a couple of days, though I do in live in NoCal where there is stupid money. I like that car, just not willing to go over $50k for it. What does the group think about offering $42.5k knowing I will get a counter or doing say $47k with no room to move?

IMO, (Repeating myself) You need to verify the build quality w/ a PPI prior to offer. If the car is as described, I would only make my best offer. Why add insult to injury? I do not believe the owner would be asking for offers if there were multiple parties interested in the car.
