Value of '87 Carrera Targa?
I have a well maintained 1987 Carrera Targa that will likely be up for sale. Was hoping to get a ballpark asking price.
The facts... 1987 911 Carrera 3 owners Black w/ Linen interior 145,000 miles All receipts since new Literally just completed a rebuild. Head studs, valves, guides, fuel lines, fly wheel... Clutch replaced at about 125K Matching Michelins with plenty of tread Fuchs black with polished rims Cross drilled rotors and brakes less than a year old Targa top rebuild by Cars Inc. New seals too. No leaks. Interior in excellent condition. Front sport seats. Both power and covered by Paul Champaign in a linen-on-linen pascha print. Porsche CDR 220 Becker radio with iPhone4 adapter. Very OEM look. Rear seat shoulder belts. Has AC present but unbelted and when last checked did not blow cold. PO said cruise control doesn't work. I have never tried it. Will check. Exterior is ok when waxed... Good at 10 feet. No dings but the usual front end chipping. Very tired when wax is striped. Has the Carrera script at the lower doors. I would also appreciate two cents on selling with or without an original Carrera tail. To be clear it was not purchased new with a tail. This was my doing. Look forward to a discussion. Thanks. -John

Was the engine work done by a known shop? I'll be the first to stick his neck out, and say - $18-19K. It sounds as if you have 'driver' quality paint, and it is very expensive to bring that up to match what it sounds like the interior is.

Yes it was... RS Motorwerks in Atlanta. I had an estimate on the paint and your right it isn't chump change. For now I can keep it waxed and it is a great looking 911.

I am on the hunt for a Carrera Targa for a first time 911 shopper. I am finding asking prices range from $14K up.
Typically the G50 cars are at $17.5K up, asking. An original paint car with under 100K miles, $21K and up, asking. Unfortunately, I do not have enough visibility into actual transactions to say what these cars are selling for. But a few G50s I've looked into with asking prices around $19K have sold... On your black G50, I'd say $19-20 is the correct listing range. Oddly enough, Porsche owners are more sensitive to 100K+ mileage than people who have not previously owned 911s -- at least in my experience. So this community may not be your best venue for advertising... I cannot advise on the tail. It's a matter of personal preference. The tail, if excellent, is worth around $800 by itself, so if you have a plain black lid to offer as an alternative to a prospect, that would cover you either way.

Thanks for the insight... My thought on the tail was that it just might be worth more as a separate sale than an attraction for more buyers.
I was thinking that the documented maintainence and the recent top end service would put most buyers at easy with a 140+k car. I would think a wise p-car enthusiast might even see it as an asset over a non-rebuild. You know it's coming and you know it isn't cheap. I am thinking that 19-20k would be reasonable but honestly the numbers are all over the map. Appreciate any other comments. -John

Help me understand what you're saying here since I can be a tad slow on the up-take at times. In reading this forum for a couple of years now in my hunt for my first 911, it seems that 100K+ mileage on an '80s 911 is very acceptable and that lower-mile cars can have problems of their own due to 'under-use.' Granted, high-mile cars need to have well documented service histories, preferably from competent shops, but just exactly how are Porsche owners sensitive to high-mile cars? Is it because of high-mile cars that have numerous owners and spotty/no service records? Are these guys any different than other specialty car guys in their aversions, likes and dislikes? Just trying to learn the Porsche world vs. the "rest of world" car-guy thought process!
