Am I asking too much?
Recently I had put my 88 Carrera on C/L for sale.
Now the car is not perfect but it runs well and has only 70k on the clock. Known issues were disclosed in the ad and they were as follows: Car runs very well but has an intermittent tendency to smoke. This, I believe is the valve guide issue that these cars are known for. I am including a complete set of heads freshly rebuilt by Henry Schmidt @ Supertec. Other issues are the sunroof is inoperative(cables, as I can hear the motor still). A/C compressor has a leak and therefore does not cool. Car had a windows-out respray sometime before I got it and is better than average. Interior is and off-white and is about a 8/10. Wheels are O.E. Fuchs 16x7" front and 16x8" rear that, unfortunately were chromed and show signs of their age and are pitted somewhat. I do have a have another set of Fuchs in the same sizes that are not chromed but are in need of refinishing. Only mods are Momo Prototipo steering wheel, Dansk single in dual out muffler and Steve Wong chip. Tires are excellent with more than 80% tread remaining. I had it priced at $13,500 and people were offering me ridiculous numbers like $8k for it. I'm sure I could part it out for more than that, but that would be a sad way to go........ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I am no expert on a car's value. If these "low" offers came from the mainland then they may have adjusted for freight charges. To a local buyer I think your price is a good starting point. Just my 2 cents worth.

It's interesting.
I really want the brown Carrera in the F/S section but I think it needs more work than your car, it has double your cars milage and I was thinking $8k was a fair price for it. I would have expected you to get 11k+ for what looks like uch a desirable color (is it meteor/ slate met grey ? ) Good luck with the sale. |

Thanks for the input guys. I didn't think I was being greedy. The car is still a great runner and I switch between it and my Miata for daily use.
If I can't get what I want for it. I'll store it for awhile while I gather the parts to do a total rebuild on the engine........

I don't think you are greedy, I think everyone currently looking is waiting for the desperation price. It could be a sign of the times.

I agree with the others who think that your price is being discounted by people who want to take the freight charges off the purchase price. In all honesty, if that car were here on the mainland, your price would be too low and might even scare people into thinking that there's something wrong with it.
Maybe try to find a way to advertise it to buyers in Japan? They buy cars from the mainland all the time and are ready to pay shipping. Your car might be just what some Japanese businessman wants to add to his collection.

I think it is a fair asking price. Although any potential buyer will have to consider the cost of the valve/head work to bring it up to snuff. Factoring that in could bring your price down a few thousand I would expect.

Carrera prices are all over the place. We had a fully rebuilt G50 Targa sell in LA a few weeks ago for $14000. There are quite a few with asking prices in the high $20K range.
If your car was here in LA, I don't believe you'd have any difficulty getting close to your asking price plus the $1K in shipping.

Smaller Market Means Longer Sales Time
Car looks great, popular color, good miles. My guess is combo of guide wear disclosure and location just reduce the number of prospective buyers. Even with rebuilt heads, unless they can wrench, a shop pulling the heads plus "while we're in here" work can be a scary big ($8K+ s/cases) bill. Llimited local prospects plus many just don't want multi drop shipping hassles. To a local or LA prospect who can wrench it's reasonable, to the rest of us you have to make the potential risk and hassle, versus alternatives worthwhile. If you can swap the heads, offer a strong local ppi and offer it shipped to LA you can ask $20K+, as is you may have to lower your px $2K, few want to buy a car needing major work. Best of luck, if not in a hurry maybe some patience will pay off.

I love the colour combo, myself, wheels don't bother me. I think it's really fairly priced, but yeah, the shipping would be a deal breaker for most. What about advertising it for $16k with shipping to the west coast included? That way your CA buyers would have minimal to no shipping costs, and buyers everywhere else would have shipping costs only from CA, which is where probably 50% of P-cars are sourced from anyway.

Wow...
That seems like a very fair price to me. An '88 G50 coupe with 70k miles in a nice color combo for $13.5k?? Are there no 911 air cooled enthusiasts on the island?
What would shipping to the CONUS be? I can't help but believe that 10 years or so down the road we'll look back and wonder why we didn't jump on all these good condition pre '89 911's and store a few. The stock market is so wacky that I'm beginning to believe a tangible asset like a good air cooled 911 may be a decent investment "vehicle!" I have some old HMN's from the early 80's and it's painful to review Ferrari and Porsche pricing in those days... |

Thanks yeah i missed that, even so my friend just bought an 85 coupe similar here in LA for $10k and checking on ebay actual sales shows the highest one sold for recently was $11.6k. Seems the only interest is in early stuff.

I think you're priced very fairly especially given the color, year, miles and it's a coupe. Not to mention the $1500 in rebuilt heads you're including.
I have a well sorted '86 Targa in great shape that I recently pulled off of the market because I was sick of lowball offers. I think the market is soft and there just aren't enough buyers out there especially given the time of year. If you can, hold onto the car until spring time and try selling it then. |
