What is a complete front oil cooler set-up for a 69-73 911 worth these days?
I have a very nice original front oil cooler set-up I just pulled from my 2,2T which had a 2.4S motor in it (For some crazy reason I decided to go back to the original motor which doesn't need a front oil cooler). I am considering selling it. It's a complete set-up with the trombone cooler, hard lines, thermostat etc. I also have the end lines that connect to the oil reserve tank. I just left them in the box when taking pic's.
As regards condition, it is really nice. it has a few small dents from installation etc., but no crushed lines anywhere. I have looked around to try to get a feel for pricing, but the only thing I can find for sale are the front trombone loops which our host and others sell new for north of $500. This is of course only a small part of the complete set-up I have. I am guessing that these are pretty rare then.. Also, mine has no leaks, the thermostat works perfectly and the pipe threading all around are all intact and undamaged. Here are some pic's. Any info/advice appreciated. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hm if some one is 'upgrading' the top of the market would be the finned lines from Elephant racing. If some one is restoring...probably a bunch. I think you can still buy the lines new from Porsche (I guess you checked PP)? Maybe 1/2 that price? I know you can buy the trombone and T-stat new still.

Not what you think it is
This is a 911SC style. Very plentiful still- it's worth maybe $400?
There are three different systems for 69-73 911's and used different lines, thermostats, and coolers : '69-'71 (Behr cooler- small fittings.) '72 only (Behr cooler- large fittings.) '73 only (Loop cooler only.) Good luck. |

Thanks for your comments, but $400 is absurdly cheap.
Since posting this, I have meanwhile looked at Elephant Racing's website and they quote $475 for each oil line. Multiply that x 2, add the thermostat crossover lines, the thermostat itself, add the original trombone cooler and the price exceeds $2500. |

I see them around for the $400 range. often they get removed to upgrade, then sold. there are less and less cars out there that don't have them so they are getting cheaper as there are more being offered. |

I see you have one post and are a new user to the board. Plse send me a link to one of these so called $400 complete functioning front oil cooler set-ups. By the way, my set-up came off of a 1973 911S, not an SC.

Take a look at the for sale section. While I think $400 is on the low side, it isn't unheard of. The trombone cooler that you have isn't particularly desirable. I usually see these setups (with a trombone or radiator) sell in a range between $500 - $750. Issue tends to be condition and location, as shipping can be expensive and a real PITA. A local buyer will likely be willing to pay more than someone who needs to have them shipped.

Here you go:
Oil Lines: $1559 Porsche 911 Oil Cooler kits - Elephant Racing Thermostat: $395 ELEPHANT RACING 911 Oil Thermostat Factory trombone oil cooler: $586 Pelican Parts - Product Information: 911-207-050-01-OEM Add brackets, cross over line etc and the price goes well over $2700. My 10 years of experience on this board and on the early911sreg has been that good used parts are usually priced at appr half the cost of new. $400 works out to be 14% of the cost of new. No way. |

50% is a good rule of thumb but it isn't universal. New Targa tops are over $10K, but perfect used ones aren't getting $5K by a long shot.
I have bought and sold several used sets with the trombone cooler in the $350-600 range. Add $200 for a 28 row cooler, maybe $300 for a Carrera cooler. Even so, these do not "fly off the shelves" at these prices. If your trombone is the '73-only type, that may be worth a few bucks to the right buyer (concourse type). I don't know how to spot the unique trombone by sight, but someone here or on earlyS will. There was a guy here on pelican looking for one for a while, check the classifieds. |

While I appreciate the comments here, I have pretty much answered my own question on this subject. I am located in Germany and I believe I will have better chance of getting what it's worth here if I decide to sell it. The Germans are buying these early cars because of their historical importance and collector value, and the market for a well preserved original example has jumped over the past 5 years. This is also the reason why the early prices in the States have gone up as well. It is the demand from the European market. And the first thing they do when they buy these cars is send them directly to German restoration specialists and have them brought back to their original specs. A Carrera oil cooler is one of the first things that would come off an early car - after the whale tale and the RSR spoiler..... ;-) |

![]() ![]() I am watching this with interest, as I am looking to buy a set of lines that are not in perfect condition. I want to try repairing them, perhaps by combining good sections together with other good sections. If I have success I will pass on the info to all. One of the biggest problems is shipping. Does anyone have a photo of the Elephant lines as they are shipped? I would think a sheet or two of plywood in the appropriate size is necessary. blau911- please post your location so we know how far you are when considering shipping costs. Len ![]() |

Blau911 - Please keep us posted on your sale result and whether the buyer was local or you had to ship these. I am interested in the value of these as well. Thanks

No need for debating this too much: The market will certainly do the talking.

blau911 ,
I get your drift as far as list prices being high . But used merchandase , that is fairly common does not equate to high pricing. I do not know about the regulator. But the actual cooler in your photo is neither a 1972 (radiator style) or 1973 (loop) unit. The loop is not correct for 73 MY (you can find photos of one on this forum , it is one year only). I would guess the lines are post 73MY also as the junction fittings change per front cooler type also ...again 1973MY is one year only. Much of this stuff is one year only for many related pre-74 cooler systems. For instance , intermediatary pipes (connect long pipes with radiator cooler) for 1972MY are one year only. Check the PET catalogs and you can see for yourself. The big dollar systems are 1973 MY & earlier in good condition , which can be used for S model restorations. |

Why not just posted it in the for sale section and see what happens? Sounds pretty stupid but it would save a lot of typing of opinions. Put if for $2500 or $10,000 for that matter who cares. If one person thinks is worth that much and someone else agreed and is willing to pay than power to both. I'll be tearing my out of my car and selling it too...
