thoughts on 993
Found a very nice looking 993 coupe in Midnight blue for sale. Clean in and out. Asking 30k. Higher mileage than I hoped for - 125k but it has had a recent top end rebuild at P dealership to tune of 7k. It looks to be up to date on all maintenance. No accidents. Providing it all checked out and earned a decent ppi do you think the engine work outweighs the extra miles for the price? - or is it a wash? I ask because there seem to be quite a few 80k mile cars close to that price ($30k) available. This one is my preferred colors though... and I have been told I am a little picky...

993
I would say a 125k mile 993 with new valve guides and cleaned air injection ports is better than 80k miles without. That said, $7k is kind of low for a top end rebuild all said and done. I would check and see what was included in that job.

need more info...
What year? C2 or C4? Options? Coupe or Cabrio? 6 speed manual hopefully, subtract $5k (at least) for a tiptronic. Driver use I assume with that kind of mileage.
If it is a late '97-'98 993 6 speed coupe with good options (LSD, sport seats/steering wheel, etc..), with a recent $7k top end, a nice color (+$1k to $2k)I'd say $30k is a fair price, not great. If it's a base stripper '95, it's a bit too high (maybe $3k to $4k too high). The '95 models still have the dreaded SAI issues (just no CEL/OBD I) and they all seem to have substandard valve guide material - the $7k top end should have taken care of both issues. The recent $7k top end is a big plus, it sounds like a great "usable" 993. I'd love to find a nice 993 driver myself some day. All the electronic are a bit scary in an older car (compared to the classic '64 to '89), but I think it's basically a sound machine. |

Thanks for the responses guys. It is a coupe. C2 6spd. The option sticker has these codes on it. Not sure what all they mean. Is midnight blue considered a desirable (+1 or 2K) color? I realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder (and also the checkbook holder) but just want to know if I should expect a premium looking at this color.

Midnight Blue is not really a highly desirable color, I would not add or subtract anything for that. The price seems fair for a c2 with 130k considering the top end. $7k is a reasonable price for top end. Bottom end is robust, you shouldn't too much about it. 993's are great, but more complex cars than the older t-bar cars. 17 years and 125k miles could mean lots more to invest if the car has not been maintained. Insist on good documentation.
You could get a much, much lower mileage car for mid-30's. There are lots of really good cars out there. Do your best not to get caught up in the emotion of it. If needed, pay someone knowledgeable to go with you and be a voice of reason.

Yeah but WHAT YEAR? 95's have the OBD1; so while they can have a SAI issue, you will not get a CEL, and it will not prevent a successful smog check. The SAI only acts as a bellows which enhances the speed in which the cat comes to full temp. Smog stations will not pass your vehicle until the CEL is addressed. Voice of reason??? There is NO substitute for a quality PPI!

its a 96. But with a recent top end would you not expect any SAI issue would be resolved?
