Price Opinion 1986 911 ?
Looking to buy following and wondering what thoughts there were in its current market value ?
------1986 Black/Black 911 Coupe (915), One Owner, 175,000 miles, no major engine or transmission work, runs nice and presents well, aircond works, cruise works, clutch replaced, alternator replaced, fuel pump replaced, interior original with a couple small tears in seats, radio non original -- a good daily driver with body and paint maintained as required over the years ie nil dents and nil rust evident , Porsche specialist serviced entire life. Owner seeking $17500. Any comments on how far away a major spend on Engine / Transmission might be are also appreciated. |

price opinion 1986 911
Have had several 3.2's and currently have an '86. Complete engine work and tranny could cost you $15k give or take depending of needs. A decent 1986 can be had for about $18-22k so you would be way upside-down on the car. Take it to a good mechanic and hace PPI done on it and see what he says. A P car with 176k miles may still run for a long but I probably would not pay high teens for it.

Agree with acegx, the price is a little high for the mileage. If it passes a PPI reasonably, offer 14,000 tops.

Two years ago I sold a darn near perfect '86 911 coupe for $16K, it had 107K on the clock. It took me months to sell it. You buy one with 175K............brother you'll own it.....as in forever.
As much as I like mid eighties Porsches, I have never in my life had such a hard time selling a brand of car. I see nice cars here linger and linger in the for sale section. I still do not understand it...........the middie 911 is are some of the finest cars I have ever owned......buying them is easy.............selling them..........is another story. Most will say they don't go into a buy thinking of selling.............but you will, we all do. |

I don't know if its worth $14k? Were you able to get a good Porsche Shop to look at it?
The best $200 bucks you will ever spend! I probably would not pay that for it but I haven't seen it. How are the tires, the seats, dash, original parts? There are just too many variables. The biggest goes back to the engine and how the car was driven, maintained, and the trail of receipts with mileage verification. All those odometers break and I mean "all". That much mileage the odo probably went at least twice. Sorry for the bad news. These are great cars but get a good one!

Just as a comparison point I bought my 1984 coupe with 103k miles on it in excellent condition a little over a year ago for $14,500.

An 86 in very good condition that passes PPI is worth way more than 14k.

If the engine and trans have never been touched, how about the brakes? clutch? rubber suspension bushings / shocks etc?
While some motors do last 200-300K miles it sure seems more risky paying a high market price and THEN have to spend big money on rebuilding an engine or trans. As someone mentioned, you would be way upside down and moving forward, folks would never pay big money for a super high miles (above 200K) example.

About nine months ago I bought my 86, same 175 k as the one your looking at. Had a top end done 30 k mikes ago. Had new shocks, clutch and transmission and few other things done. Runs great, good compression, burns no oil. I paid 16.5. I was willing to pay a little premium for the rebuild. High miles will scare most off, not me..I think around 15 k would be fair for no rebuild. Tim

Timchar -- What did the top end rebuild run on the 1986 car you bought ?
I'm being told that when needed this will run approx $5k. The car I am looking at has had every maintenance item done, as and when the independant p shop that services it has suggested work be done (same shop for the last 14 years) -- so suspension, clutch etc etc are all good -- the worry is that the transmission and engine have not needed any major work to date with 172000 miles on the car. |
